Way off topic -- John Daly
I am a fan of Daly's. I like hometown area guys doing well. That said, I think he is a trainwreck waiting to happen. Anyone else think like me that Butch Harmon's actions reflect that of a true friend? Reportedly, Daly wants Butch to publicly retract his comments because they may have cost him some endorsements (in March, Harmon dumped Daly because he was drinking in a tent, then, IIRC grabbed one of the guys in the tent to be his caddie). I like to think Harmon is seeing the bigger picture, that there is a friendship that he is acting upon. Daly is self-destructive, along the lines of Chris Farley and Mike Tyson, surrounded by enablers, lacking the kick in the crotch to make them wake up realize the brick wall up ahead. In the case of Chris Farley, he never did.

I don't know what the perspective of some of his fans back home think about this. I think many of us want to say what he's doing is normal, because otherwise we'll have to take a closer look at ourselves. By the same token, we don't want to see him change too much, b/c as long as he acts that way, we feel more normal, and comforted by his actions on a public stage. We feel sorry for him, but do we want to see these things stop? I mean, I do. I would rather he never pick up another club, I would rather never ever receive another second of selfish enjoyment seeing him grip it and rip it if he would engage in healthy habits, get to the point where he can look in the mirror and smile instead of smashing it (as has been reported in a book somewhere). He is a nice guy, goes out in the community and such. I think he has kids too.

I have heard some folks lump Daly with Vick and some others. I would distinguish Daly's actions as self-destructive, unlike Vick, Pacman Jones, etc, but at the same time, he needs to be held responsible for his inability to harness his talents and produce anything resembling consistent average performance.

But, I digress.

Daly's got a heart of gold (his contributions to the "Make a Wish Foundation" have been incredible), but has no self-control regarding his personal habits...such a waste for a man who is truly one of the most highly likeable athletes (one-on-one) in any sport. 03-banghead

I agree his intentions seem good, he seems like a good guy. Which is why I think is so tragic that purported friends/fans would ever let this behavior go. It's gotten to the point that I question the intentions of anyone who defends his actions. His behavior could lead to his death, and some people who claim to be fans are more concerned about continuing that behavior that sacrificing their levity, enjoyment, humor, entertainment and get this guy some help.

Whatever moral flaws he has don't compare to the moral flaws of some of these other folks who target others as victims. But he has serious self-esteem flaws that, to me, are far more dangerous. Life threatening, even.

The best thing that can happen to him is if people will express their love for his heart without support for his actions -- with some sort of either tough behavior or flat out ambivalence or neglect to his professional performances.

The sad thing is that there have been numerous top PGA Tour players who have tried and failed to befriend John over the years with scant success...even Jack Nicklaus contacted him years ago and opened his door to him on a 24/7 basis, all to no avail.
