BlazerSax Wrote:UAB Band Dad Wrote:Blazer85 Wrote:The argument about "jury of one's peers" is being discussed involving the Philadelphia, MS civil rights murder trial. The man being tried is in his 80s and the argument being made is that his "peers" have mostly all passed away now. Which is true... particularly in the case of the MS man. A jury of his peers from the 1960s-1970s would probably yield a very different result than a group of his "peers" from the 1990s-2000s.
1) Actually, that is exactly correct. He was tried once before and the jury hung. There was one juror who refused to convict Edgar Ray Killen because Killen was a preacher.
2) He still planned and instigated the murder of three men, and I hope they throw his eighty year old butt in the slammer, walker and all. He richly deserves it.
1) I have news for that jurors. Preachers are people, and people kill people.
2) I haven't watched the case, but is there pretty solid, undeniable evidence that he did commit the crimes?
Also, if he was acquitted before, why is he back in court again?
As he stated earlier, Killen's jury was hung by one juror who would not convict a preacher. A hung jury is not an acquittal.
As for evidence, in most of these 1960's civil rights trials, the accused has been bragging for years about getting away with the crimes they commit. I don't know the specifics, but the evidence is usually pretty strong. It just that a "jury of peers" won't convict.

I don't know if he's been living "high and mighty," but I believe I read that he has been in Mississippi the entire time.
If the movie (which starred Gene Hackman) is anything close to accurate historically, this is a very interesting story.

There have been some interesting juror quotes since the verdicts were announced.
In the jurors' press conference yesterday afternoon, one juror who is a mother said, ""As a parent, you are constantly protective of your children. What mother in her right mind would allow that to happen? To just volunteer your child to sleep with someone? Not so much Michael Jackson, but any person."
One of the jurors on CNN this morning said he believes Michael Jackson has molested children in the past - but there wasn't enough evidence in this particular case to prove it.
