RE: ETSU/Team USA
Okay, first of all, if you go to the thread "WAY TO GO KENNY HAWKINS" I mention a Little Birdie who told me about this.

Now, did Smith collect that from the board? It's not definite, but certainly possible.

On Smith's piece- the only real criticism I will have of this is that this was written on a Saturday and he doesn't have all his contacts. If I had the access to ETSU he has- I might want to walk into the AD's office with Coach Mangrum when Mullins returns and say "We want answers!"

Or, for that matter, do the same thing with James Ellis- who seems to be the keyholder here. I know how frustrating it is to wait and wait for a guy to call you back who doesn't. Sometimes a deadline demands "phone calls were not returned," but the thing here is that this didn't have to come out today.

Now, a piece like this can flush out a guy like Ellis who isn't returning calls- so we'll see if there's a follow up.

If we get that, then I can't blame Smith that much for this. I do think he treats Stanton with kid gloves- I will say that.

I will hold my opinion on Smith for a bit because I have to go right now, but it will come.

But thanks for the kind words, folks.

You must realize that when this offer was made in the fall, the ad was busy figuring out how to pack all those soccer fans in to the new stadium, trying to figure out how much of etsu's budget was going to finance his vacation back to Hawaii, or ducking the issue of how many of his neighbors are waving at him while they drive past on their way to knoxville.

Actually, I remember on one of his WXSM interviews Mullins was talking about tuning into a UT football game.

I just thought- "he hasn't a clue, has he?"

RE: ETSU/Team USA
Sorry, haven't had a chance to weigh in yet on this, but I think the article is pretty clear there was an offer to ETSU to play, they "passed" on it, and Milligan took them up on it. If that's not the case, the BHC, just like any other newspaper, will print a correction if someone can show something to the contrary. But they make a point to specifically note that ETSU was offered the game first and passed. mullins wasn't quick enough (or innovative enough) to think about making some small changes to Cardinal Park to accommodate them.

Unfortunately, this kind of thing is typical of the haughty attitude of mullins and co. He is arrogant, it is "his department," and that attitude shows through in his comments, frequent lack of flexibility on things, poor athletic vision, and interactions with fans. He is completely unqualified for the job and would have been removed by now at any other university. The problem is, if mullins fails, then stanton is seen as a failure and he therefore won't remove him. And mullins enjoys his final four trips with Kelly Hodge too much to retire.

BTW, thanks Brian Smith, keep up the good work. The Johnson City Press is sold to the highest bidder, and WJCW isn't far behind them. Advertising dollars dictate which stories are reported, and which are overlooked (note: still no mention in the JC paper about the TN state legislation regarding ETSU football by Johnson City's OWN representatives - wonder why)

There was a time when the JC Press was considered the second best paper in the tri cities. Probably 4th now. They might put up a fight for third.

RE: ETSU/Team USA
I think you have to understand this is about an editorial stance.

I wrote earlier how I have talked to two newspaper publishers in the last two months and they have told me, outright, "We try to stay away from anything that is controversial."

Lover used to try and say I got fired from Sports Talk. Actually, that was a mutual decision to leave brought out by the fact that- GASP- the new publisher didn't like it that I had the audacity to report that Tim Smith was nicknamed "Little Bow Wow" by Fresno State fans.

Instead, when he came on he kept giving me this crap about how "in our next issue, we'll print an NCAA Tournament bracket! People love those!"

Yes. I'm going to pick up Sports Talk to get the same thing I've downloaded off the 'net or cut out of Monday's newspaper. Real good idea. Take two pages of reporting and editorial out for something that will be obsolete by the time we print it because the play-in game will have occurred. You're on the right path.

Anyway, you know what happened after that. I decided I didn't need this for the pay I was getting.

Funny thing happened after that is Sports Talk went WAAAAAY in with ETSU after that. I was in Pittsburgh obviously so I didn't see too much of the paper but when I did I would read "Let's thank David Mullins for doing a great job at ETSU and . . ."

Which I found personally insulting. But you saw that the paper was out of business in a year.

Now, I mention this because it is the PERFECT BUSINESS MODEL as to why the media struggles so much here. "We want to shy away from anything controversial . . . "

WHY? Why not do your job? We're down to two TV news sources. Could it be that's because if all you're going to do is report press releases, the court docket, and police reports that people don't really want to watch?

Personally, I've had dealings with three people at the BHC in recent times and found them all to be dishonest. And we've been through the criticisms of Smith on here. He seems to place all the blame at the feet of Mullins and treats Stanton with kid gloves- even green lighting Stanton's continual "athletics revival" projects.

But at least the BHC is letting their reporters report. I know for a fact of a reporter at the Press who had a story critical of Mullins' coaching practice- this was back when he was the tennis coach- and it was shelved.

But it's like this. Why hasn't another news source picked up and interviewed Ellis, who really doesn't have anything to hide here, and gotten to the bottom of it, as it is the key?

It's a dead-on story for anyone who wants to take it on. Why won't anyone?

I mean, other than the fact WFHG has no news sense.
