WVU adds Liberty to 2009 football slate
I'll bet Jerry Falwell loved this... The Charleston Daily Mail Wrote:Mountaineers add Liberty to their 2009 football slate

April 2, 2008
MORGANTOWN - West Virginia University has scheduled a football home game with Liberty University for Sept. 5, 2009.
The Mountaineers confirmed the game Tuesday.
"Liberty put it out and asked us if they could put it out and we said it was OK," WVU Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Michael Fragale said.
"We basically have a policy where we try not to release games unless it's part of the year coming up. That game is a whole season away."
WVU now has confirmed 12 games for 2009: home against Liberty, Colorado, East Carolina, Marshall, Connecticut, Louisville and Pitt and at Auburn, Cincinnati, Rutgers, South Florida and Syracuse.
Liberty will replace another Division I-AA team, Villanova, which will be this year's season-opening opponent for WVU. The Wildcats, who compete in Big East Conference basketball but not football, will visit Mountaineer Field on Aug. 30.
"This is a one-year deal," said Kevin Keys, who is Liberty's assistant athletic director for external affairs.
Fragale said WVU will pay Liberty $365,000 for the one-game contract.
"Obviously, schools like us do this for the payday," said Keys, whose school is located in Lynchburg, Va. "But we try to find bigger schools to play so we can get bigger paydays and not have to do it every year.
"We played Wake Forest in 2006 and will play them again in 2012. In 2005, we played Connecticut and last year, we played Toledo from the Mid-American Conference. In 2011, we are going to play Virginia."
Keys is a former sports publications director for WVU.
Founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell in 1971, Liberty plays in the Big South Conference, which includes Virginia Military Institute.
WVU Coach Bill Stewart coached VMI from 1994-96. The Flames won their first conference title last season.
Now that all 12 are scheduled for 2009, let's get this football season started.

Shameful... but understandable. We're all in the same boat.

Yep. The big boys bought up our usual early opponents.

It seems like if we have to get opponents like this we could at least get Sunbelt or lower tier C-USA or MAC or WAC teams.

We will. It's just that schedules are made up a long time in advance for many schools. When a conference realignment happens, teams are scrambling to rework schedules for years to accomodate new members - or adjust for old members who bailed (We had both. Remember?).

Non-BCS teams are in demand. You'll have to offer C-USA and WAC teams a 1 for 1 now. Mac or Sunbelt might still do a 2 for 1 but that's changing. It's great that college football power is equalizing.

In a world of 12 game schedules this is bound to happen, particularly when there are only 7 conference games to play.

Maybe Nova doesn't feel like playing WVU back-to-back years. I think they also have a series with Temple they are starting soon.

Nope. WVU won't be signing too many home and homes with MAC schools. You can forget that right now.
Would Alabama sign a home and home with UAB?

Alabama won't schedule UAB. But non-BCS teams are getting better deals and actually getting some teams that you wouldn't expect to travel for some road games.
For example, Texas is playing at Wyoming, a 32,000 seat stadium, in 2009. Wyoming does have to go to Austin twice to offset that.

My sentiments exactly. If we had to schedule a 1-AA team, did it have to be Falwell's?

Researching says the only one was 1949. WV lost at Ohio 17-7.

At that time, OU and WVU were the same size.
