My take on Crean...
He saw the writing on the wall as far as the future of the Big East is concerned. That is the only sensible reason I could come up with for him to take the position at an NCAA sanctioned IU with sub standard facilities. A precursor to the split imo.

Also, Crean is a Big Ten guy. He's an Izzo disciple and probably wanted to jump to a Big Ten job, and saw Indiana as a marquee Big Ten job despite the sanctions.

I don't think it is a huge loss for Marquette. Marquette can land a better coach. It will be very tough for Crean to compete in the BE against elite coaches like Pitino, Calhoun and Boeheim.

While not impossible, I think it will be difficult for Marquette to hire a better coach than Crean. The Golden Eagles have done quite well in the Big East during his tenure.

Actually IU really doesn't have $$$$. They have some of the worse facilities in the nation for a BCS school.

Crean had several ties to Indiana. I'm not surprised by this move, and I wouldn't read anything into it.

Really now---they are in the Big 10. They receive a ton more $$$ than Marquette does in TV $$$, Tix receipts, etc...

A huge difference between a Big East BB only and a BCS FB/BB program.

Some of the best situations at colleges come after probations have been handed down

-Kentucky landed Rick Pitino after the Chris Mills recruiting scandal
-Kansas landed Roy Williams after Larry Brown put the program on probation due to recruiting violations
-Thad Matta moved into a great situation after the violations handed down cost Jim O'Brien his job

TM, their athletic department is not rolling in the cash. Their facilities are pretty much still in the 1970s. I will just about guarantee you Marquette has better basketball facilities then IU. It weird but that is the way it is.

IU is a program with no roster, NCAA sanctions coming and sub standard facilities. MU has a great fanbase and resources relative to IU. Crean wasn't starving by any stretch.

I could be wrong, but I think Marquette will fade into relative obscurity ala St. John's, Seton Hall and DePaul.

Lets see the coaching hire first, before you make such statements. Seriously. 03-banghead

MU has only had 2 losing seasons in the last 42. Its a pretty good job. It will pay top dollar. Nice facilities. Great conference. Its just a matter of picking the right guy.

FYI, rumor has it, IU offered Crean $2.5 million/year.

RE: My take on Crean...
Marquette is a good job but Indiana, despite things recently, is still considered a elite program.

Plus a couple other things to consider. Marquette has a nice RENTED facility. Nothing compares to playing on campus!! Most players, coaches and fans prefer on campus facilities.

Another thing to consider is Milwaukee. I am sure it was a fine city in its day but that day is gone.

Despite what some are saying about money IU has football and is rolling in a ton more money that Marquette.
