Yeah...UNC and Duke, located basically "next door", their success has ZERO impact on NC State.
Why didn't I think of that?
Since 1975, UNC has reached the Sweet 16 in 22 seasons, more than any school in the country (Kentucky is second with 20, Duke third with 19).
This was the 12th time that UNC has been seeded No. 1, more than any other school ( Duke 10, Kentucky 9, Kansas 8).
Highest seed ever for NC State was a #3 seed.
Cal looks stupid for staying AT MEMPHIS and not taking the NC State job...right?

The reality is that Cal could be very successful at NCST. At Memphis he has the ball rolling at NCST he would have to get it strated again. Two different cases. IF Memphis moves into Big East then really there is no reason to go to NCST.
Maybe Cal knows whats comming and he has the talent to wait it out.

I didn't say that Cal staying at Memphis made him stupid.
I am suggesting that NC State has a solid basketball tradition that is well funded. They have all the facilities and funding to win a national championship.
A very similar situation was happening with Cincinnati before Huggins arrived. Huggins had Cincinnati at the highest levels of basketball (even when he competed with storied programs like Memphis and Louisville). Cincinnati is not the team they were under Huggins for a number of factors that DO NOT include Louisville or the Big East Conference.
Sometimes external events happen (like Len Bias at Maryland) and sometimes universities "take control" of the athletic programs (like NC State after Valvano).
Once again, NC State's lack of success has more to do with its internal controls than with Duke and North Carolina. They have become much more liberal under Sidney Lowe. His challenge is recruiting (like the challenge for any coach). Until NC State brings in the All-Americans, like all schools, they will struggle.

Cal has created the ideal program. In many ways, he has created "Huggin's Cincinnati program" at Memphis. He is recruiting the top level players.

I remember that game because I was there and Ellis Myles was on the ground screaming in pain with his knee destroyed and Crean was being a total prick.
I don't think him and Rick Pitino after that had any relationship and that was probably true with most of the other BIG EAST and C-USA coaches with him.

I live in Indiana, all joking aside, this is a hire the Hoosiers had to make. I think they hit a home run. I heard yesterday on Louisville radio that Crean openly campaigned for the job when they gave it to Sampson the last time so he really wanted to be in Bloomington.
I know it hurts the Big East to lose a quality guy like Tom Crean but make no mistake Marquette will replace him with another great coach. They have great tradition in Milwaukee.

He is a smart man.
Cal was gone to NC State. He told his assistants on the plane ride back from Raleigh to Memphis that he was taking the NC State job. Luckily for us, some very influential boosters bent his ear when he landed in Memphis and convinced him to stay. It looks lide a wise decision now.

Once Cal gets into the BEast he won't be going anywhere, unless one of the Top 5 positions in the country come calling.

RE: My take on Crean...
I believe we have been through this before on ncaabbs, but I have to say that I think chess has a COMPLETELY overinflated view of NC State.
Comparing NC State in this thread to IU is simply mindboggling. How do you even begin to compare the Pack to IU? You simply cannot do so with a straight face. I don't even like IU, but they are what they are. A clear 100% level above NC State, and yes, Marquette. That doesn't mean leaving Marquette was a smart move down the road, but their are job levels in college basketball. This is also despite the fact that IU does have subpar facilities.
Also, I completely disagree with the comment that if Calipari was ever going to leave he'd leave for NC State. Again, NC St is and quite near permanently is #3 in their own state, and are not a top elite program, no matter what their fans want to dream of. Cal may well never leave, but you cannot say he is their till he retires by assuming NC State equals any other job out there.

NC State and Louisville each have two national championships. All four were about the same time. 74, 80, 83 and 86.
That being said, UL has been to eight Final Fours and NC State has been to only three.

Saw on another board that Marquette is interested in the Dayton coach...seems to me they could do better than that if that's in fact the case.

The Cuse Scout board had an article that said Marquette was hot and heavy over the Wright St coach. Who knows whats going on.
