WVU used to have a heated series with Maryland. I'm not sure why it ended but I'll blame Maryland.

The WVU-Maryland series didn't end. It just took a hiatus of a few years in order for the ACC schools to adjust schedules being reworked to fit in formers BEasts. Maryland returns to the schedule in 2010 and 2011, and I figure it's just a matter of time before more are scheduled.

UofL Guy: "Hmmm, I wonder if your the one who threw the open pocket knife at coach Crum?"

Memphis Guy: "Dang, I wonder if I'll get hit by a quarter in the head at this game?"

Reminds me of a story I once heard about how the Tiger - Cardinal basketball rivalry shifted into high gear. As I recall, Memphis ("Memphis State" in those days) was playing at Louisville in the early 60's (?) when a huge fight erupted toward the end of the game. I heard our center was defending himself by swinging a metal folding chair. Maybe somebody else knows more of the particulars.

All conference basketball rivalries have to play TWICE per season.

That's what the giant 16 team conference doesn't understand but then thats what you get with a giant monster...some rivalries won't play as often as others.

MU does not play SLU. MU's former coach (Majerus) is at SLU, but there is no outcry from MU fans to schedule this game.

Says the one from the 12 team conference where the same thing can occur.

Re: Notre Dame-Purdue.

I don't believe these two play each other at all. Believe that started when Digger Phelps was coach. Some have mentioned that Phelps won't even say Purdue by name, referring to Purdue as "Indiana's opponent" for example when Purdue plays Indiana.

I believe the women's basketball teams do play each other regularly.

Considering we play both of those schools, and they no longer play each other, that commercial makes me realize how irrelevant UC basketball has become 03-weeping

Once UC returns to power next year they'll get respect in rivalries, though those commercials will probably show UC and Xavier.

I would consider Memphis a strong rival then Cincinnati considering Memphis and Louisville act like they're trying to kill each other on the field and the court. At this point I don't even know if you can consider UC and Louisville as rivals. Cincinnati and Pitt seem to be becoming a rivalry on the field and the court. Cincinnati and WVU for obvious reason in basketball and maybe in football. It's a shame that Cincinnati and Ohio State don't play each other, that might be Cincinnati's #2 rivalry behind Xavier.

RE: Big East basketball rivalries
ND rivalries translate into the Big East: Pitt, Marquette, and DePaul
However UCLA-ND game is borderline, but I think its treated like the ND-BC game
Indiana used to be a rivalry game until IU fans would purchase season tickets just to see the game, which pissed Phelps off.
I've always wanted a Butler-IU-ND-Purdue round robin in Indianapolis every year, which would bring more excitement to basketball in Indiana and be big for instate recruiting.
Another old rival was Michigan State, but we haven't played them since the late 70's.
In the end, football rivalries usually become bball rivalries i.e. Michigan

We have had some hum-dinger football games. Several team fights even before the game starts, close finished and wide blow outs. You gave us our last "thrashing" we took in Papa John's. I was in Memphis when we beat ya'll like 60-7. I was also in Memphis when we won on 4 and 17 with 7 seconds left. The last Memphis/Louisville game was a real good one I think. Wasn't that the one that was high scoring and back and forth the whole game? Wow, I need to stop talking about this stuff. It gettin' my adrenaline going.

In basketball? I'd love to see them pick up that series again.
