Okay, I am going on a nice long vacation with my family this summer. Part of that trip will be three days in and around NYC. We are camping along the way. Are there any places within driving or train distance from NYC to camp? I'm looking NE Penn, N NJ, and NY. Would appreciatet some ideas. Thanks.

The Poconos in NE Penn is very close, so are the Catskills. If you are a baseball fan--you need to go see Cooperstown.

Come to the Bronx. We'll give you a real New York experience you'll never forget.

Camping in the Bronx?

I'm not a camper, but I'll give my 2 cents, USS Intrepend {sp] in NYC is great place, Grant's Tomb by Columbia.

You seem to be a bit of a nature guy, Mike, so check out Central Park in Manhattan, Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, and Flushing Meadow in Queens if you get a chance. I usually advise people to avoid touristy areas like Wall Street, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, the former and future World Trade Center site, and the Empire State Building but check them out if your family really has a strong desire to see those places. Just be sure to keep anything valuable in the safest places possible and do not fall for any stupid scams on the streets. You can also take a ride on one of the double decker buses which tour the city and give history lessons about points of interest if you are into that sort of thing.

Southside seaport, tip of Manhatten. it's nice place to hang out with your family. If you decide to see statue of liberty, you can get boatride out from Manhatten or NJ, Manhatten side is long lines & full boat. NJ side crowd is no where near has bad. Statue of liberty park Exit 13 E on NJ turnpike, follow signs.

If you want to camp and take the train in look at Morris, Warren, Sussex, Somerset, Hunterdon Counties in Northwest and West-Central NJ. All have rail access to Manhattan either directly or via an easy transfer at Newark Penn Station or Secaucus Junction. While Manhattan is incredibly safe there is still a danger of pick pocketers in highly crowded areas although I nor anyone I know personally have never experienced a problem with such a thing. I do go into the city a lot and several friends work in Manhattan. I don't recommend much of the touristy stuff either but hell that's why you're going you aren't a resident of the area. I've lived here my entire life and have never done much of the touristy stuff. Word of advice if you plan to go to the Statue of Liberty you need to book it in advance to be able to go into the monument itself, security is overly tight there. Much of Brooklyn and Queens are also very safe. However Brooklyn does still have very bad neighborhoods and you need to be careful about venturing into them.

You should take in the Statue of Liberty, and take a ferry ride while you're there too.

Thank you Brista, that is some good information. Maybe we'll stop by and see the Rutgers campus. Is it worth seeing?

Rutgers campus is huge, as in spread out. You could fit half the UC campus in their parking lot for the RAC.

You should check out Coney Island if your family want something a little different. That part of Brooklyn is really nice especially around 4th of July :)

Plenty of camp sites in the Poconos but no rail service. You have to take rout 80 to Hackettstown or Dover NJ for rail service into NYC. There is also a new rail station between those towns but I don't know when it is opening.

Definately recommend Cooperstown if you are interested but watch out for the winding roads going in especially if you are north of it driving south. There are campsites and lakes in that area for your camper.

NY-NJ area

Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Times Square, Bronx Zoo, Broadway plays, Mets, Yankees, Science Center at Liberty Park in NJ -you can take a lunch or dinner cruise around Manhattan from there, or go to Ellis Island then the Statue of Liberty from there, Grants Tomb, Intrepid, the Jersey Shore if you need beach time for the kids to unwind, Waterparks at Dorney Park in Allentown PA or at Camelback Ski Area in the Poconos for the kids to unwind for a day too.

Museum of Natural History, Central Park, Tavern on the Green for dinner (extremely expensive). There is also an art muesum in this area if you are into that.

Don't know which way you are coming in but Gettysburg is a good place to stop if you are a Civil War Buff if you are coming up from the south.

Have fun there is plenty to do in NY and on the way.

We are going from Ft. Knox to Niagara Falls then on to NYC then to Philly then to the Daniel Boone Birthplace, Sight & Sound, Hershey, Gettysburg. Tent camping along the way.

Catch the falls at night too. The Horse Falls on the Canadian side are the best along with the boat ride up to the falls -Mermaid of the Mist I think. You can also walk behind the falls too if you haven't been there before. Enjoy!

As for the new Mount Arlington Transit Center station Panite is referring too it just opened about a month ago. It is a park and ride as well.
