Memphis is Amazing
Is anyone else beside me amazed that Memphis can win games against this good competition while shooting less than 50% at the free throw line. If they hit at a decent level, they would be unstopable.

Not something you should post on a BE board, but I agree.

RE: Memphis is Amazing
i've seen Memphis shoot over 70% SEVERAL times this season...even 2 games in a row...i would like to get some of that here in the tourney.

i want to see Memphis hit 70+% against MSU...if we do, i bet we win by 9-12 points...if not, it'll be another 5-6 point game that we have to fight and scrap to win.

come on UL, BEAT TENNESSEE!

Go Tigers!!!

If they don't step it up it could cost them down the road.

We are not exactly sharp shooters at the line either. I hope it doesn't come back to bite us. If I'm playing Memphis and it is a 5-8 point lead with 2:00 to go. I think about fouling on every possession.

Burely is a tobacco, and I believe that Bowl was played in eastern Tennessee (Cookville?) home of Tenn Tech. I think that game was in the 50s.

P.S. noted the 1956 date on that post.

Memphis can beat almost any good team by shooting just 50% from the FT line.

Now...when Memphis starts facing some VERY good/great teams in the Elite 8 and Final 4....50% from the charity stripe may not cut it.

Hopefully for the Tigers...the MSU game will be their worst one from the FT line.

RE: Memphis is Amazing
The Burley Bowl was a small college bowl game played between 1945 and 1956. Memphis played in the last Burley Bowl. It was played in Johnson City, Tennessee on the campus of East Tennessee State University.

Memphis moved up from the College Division to the University Division in 1960. Before the NCAA created Divisions in the 1970's, there was College Division (small college) and University Division (major college).

Cincinnati moved up in 1946
Louisville moved up in 1962
West Virginia moved up in 1939
Syracuse and Pitt were always in the University Division

This level of competition? I have much respect for Memphis but lets not get carried away. Beating UT Arlington and escaping a 9 loss Mississippi State team in the second round isn't all that 'amazing' in my honest opinion. We beat Oklahoma by 30 and shot 5 of 15 from the line. I'd say that's pretty amazing and disturbing. I assure you that if our free throw shooting doesn't get better really quickly there will be nothing 'amazing' about our tournament run. The same applies to Memphis and if they don't shoot better this week from the stripe I see Michigan State in the elite 8.

sorry i didn't answer, been away the last couple of days!

like 3601 said, it was a bowl played in east tennessee during 1956...it was the last Burley bowl.

anytime i start thinking about bowls, it makes me mad...we had SO many great teams in the 50's and 60's have to stay home because we were not part of a conference back then.

Go Tigers!!!

I love Johnson City. My daughter played basketball for Milligan College in Johnson City. Where did they play the Burley Bowl? During my trips to Milligan, I don't remember seeing a place big enough for a bowl.
Johnson City is a great town Just don't try to find a hotel room if Bristol is running.

My understanding is that they played it here:

Memorial Stadium

700 E. Main Street
Call: (423) 283-5822

Established in the mid 1930's, Memorial Stadium was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was orginally operated independently as "Roosevelt Memorial Stadium." The stadium came under the jurisdiction of the Parks and Recreation Department in 1961 and consists of a 6-acre football stadium used primarily for Science Hill High School home football games. Amenities include a lighted football field, concession area, restrooms, spectator seating, and 1/4 mile track. Memorial Park, adjacent to the stadium, is a 1/2 acre special use park located on Main Street.

As a tribute to Steve Spurrier the playing field was named in his honor on March 12, 1997.
