Making that move fills the gap between maryland and bc , adds huge markets and state flagship school's which the acc is lacking. From a $'s standpoint, my guess is they would probably break even with such a move, ie adding two more to the pie but uconn and rutgers would bring in some new $'s for them. Yet, they really would hurt the big east, which helps the acc + they could brand themselves as the best league. Odds that it happens slim...for starters the stupid acc probably would want syracuse, yawn another private school over the state flagship school's. Yet, i don't think the acc has the political capital to make a move. The only way it would happen would be if the big 10 picked off a big east football school, either cuse or rutgers, that might set off the chain reaction where the acc picks up uconn and than the cuse or rutgers leftover from the big ten. If those moves ever happened, the remaining big east football school's probably are reduced to mwc status, ie 9 team league by adding memphis, ecar, cflordia, and temple, actually that wouldn't be that bad of a league.

Swofford's dream continues to live on. Only two more northeastern teams and the ACC will be "fixed." Why not add WVU. UofL and Cincy and truly be a power. If the Big 10 picked off Rutgers the BE could add Temple and then go south to Memphic ECu and UCF and still have room for one more. This is more attractive than joining a 14 team ACC and puts the BE stronger in the north and south. Rutgers in the B10 may actually help the northeastern schools of the BE. It may spark an interest in Fb in the northeast that other BE schools could capitalize on.

Swofford's dream continues to live on because the Northeast is still very fragmented and not consolidated....I wouldn't exactly call it just Swofford's dream either, a consolidated eastern conference goes back to Paterno's idea for an eastern conference

Penn St. is a major Eastern player, and they're in the Big 10...Now BC & Miami are in the ACC...Notre Dame could really help by establishing itself in an eastern conference, but they never will...Louisville, Cincinnati, and South Florida are programs on the rise, but are they really northeastern? UConn is just emerging on the scene as an all-sports entity, and Rutgers has come alive...

I guess my point is, the Big East has performed extremely well lately, in both football and basketball, but that doesn't mean much because there's not a strong underlying regional continuity...Rutgers and UConn are making stronger, but in the process, they become targets for expansion

Expansion by who? BTN has not mentioned UCONN. That's just an ACc dream. You can't win the south so you dream of becoming a northeastern conference.
BTN can expand because they have the money. ACC has nothing- but a dream. If the ACC offered that expansion, the Be could counter with an offer to some ACc teams but frankly, there's nobody in the ACC we want. who. ga. TEch. Duke? UVA? FSU- has been on steady decline this whole cnetury. BC is busted. maryland- who cares. I'm beginning to believe ECU has the best upside in North Carolina- whom in the ACC would the BE be interested in? Temple is a better prize than BC.
Dream on. UCONN won't leave a growing conference for a dying one. Besides, I'm sure they remember the lawsuit, BC, ACC presidents etc. etc....
UCONN is a big dream for the ACC. THE BE Is solid as it is. It could expand overnight if it wanted to buy why? We're doing better than the ACC as is. We'll establish our eight teams and add four more down the road. If we made an offer to BC, they'd jump on it.
i'm starting to believe the BE goes south and adds the COnference USa teams in Memphis, ECU and UCF and then add Temple. We'd the the top conference in the north and the SECOND best conference in the south- instantly.

P.S. with they money they are talking about, the BTN can take LSU out of the SEC if they wanted. No body can turn the BTN down if they come with what they say will come with. Rutgers taking that offer is no slight on the BE it's just smart business.

RE: Interesting article from ACC country
ACC has watered down its basketball brand adding schools like Florida State, Miami, and Va Tech.....those are football factories and not basketball elite. Big East made a great adds on the basketball side with Louisville and Marquette. Cincinnati, Depaul and South Florida have been non-factors in Big East basketball so far. Cincinnati and South Florida were huge upside surprises in football. Big East had a homerun with Louisville and Marquette. Could you imagine if Syracuse left the Big East instead of Va Tech how bad the ACC would be.

If the ACC or Big 10 came calling, teams would jump...no one wants to get left behind and become part of a Big East revitalization effort, which pretty much means bringing in more teams from C-USA somewhere down the road.
I think you need to wait until the ACC wins a BCS bowl before even thinking about a Big East team moving that way. It makes no sense at this point. The ACC certainly isn't coming from a position of strength. Why would a Big East team want to join a 14 team football conference? I can't see the logic.

It is strange coming to this board and thinking realistically your going to get conversation about any Big East team thinking of the move. The Big East is in a position of strength. More then the ACC in my opinion.

1st off, this is all fantasy land...I don't for one second think the ACC is going to invite UConn any time soon, if ever...

2nd off, the Big East is not in ANY position of strength when you can't for certain say if a split between the football and basketball schools is on the horizon...its not a slam on the Big East, its just the truth about the nature of the conference...

I understand. This thread has certainly turned into fantasyland.

While a split possibly could strengthen the conference I think most would have to admit that the Big East has enjoyed great success over the last few years. I don't see the urgency for a split. The ACC debacle with the 3 teams leaving gave the BE with a poor bowl lineup. The next arrangement should be better.

Louisville, Cinci and USF have more then held their own in the new BE. I tip my hat to them for without their success the BE would be in trouble. While these programs overall may not be as established as those that left I have no reason to believe they will not continue to improve and eventually reach that level.

This thread started as a debate as to whether the expansion has hurt ACC basketball and the conference in general. Maybe it has, maybe hasn't. Either way the ACC will more then likely have success at some point. The Big East may face a slim chance of a team leaving for the Big Ten. The ACC I see as no threat.

I suppose the ACC further expanding with BE teams is the same wishful thinking as those that think the BE will add Penn State or Notre Dame in football. It would be nice but it ain't going to happen.

Exactly, the big 10 is the catalyst for any acc move, if in fact they ever make a move to expand. Right now there is no way the acc could go after only 2 big east school's, they would get laughed at...now maybe if they went all out and offered 4 spots to big east school's, uconn, cuse, rutgers, and w.virg it might fly, ie the abandonment issue is mostly gone but that would probably only happen if the big east has a mini civil war about their split issue and poof the acc comes in but i could see them wanting to go to 14, not so much 16. The only way the acc could get by with just taking 2 is if the big 10 changes the dynamics by snagging a big east football school, than i could see it work.

its retarded to think things don't change. I'd like a solid eastern football league and that's concept is pretty fluid right now, some school's might try to better themselves, which could leave others in the cold but i expect more changes in any case. I'd prefer bc and miami return to the big east and the football school's break and form a 10 team league, ditto a 10 team acc but that's unlikely:

I hate the ACC for what they did, but business is business and i would have done the same thing to save my Conference........

A favorable, feel good, article on the ACC expansion written on a NC State website means what? I'm surprised he didn't say they're the "best conference in the land."
Don't give the ACC too much credit though. The writer doesn't mention that Miami always complained that it was losing money playing in the BE. (A fact some USF fans are happy to ignore for now.) They were easy picking with the promise for more money. That same promise caused other teams to want to be included in the ACC deal.
The promise of more money can't be made by the ACC moving forward- they can't even sell their championship game which was mentioned in the article as a key to expanding to 12.
The Big 10, on the other hand is talking billions not millions with the BTN. If they are successful- and Michigan is already the richest program in college football- they can more than double any teams current revenue. No school will turn that offer down because it's not a promise like the ACC made, it would be based on hard numbers and money already in their hands. With that kind of money, the Big Ten could poach any team, anywhere in the nation (even yours EvilVodka) and sets the trend for the future of college sports and television.
