I shouldn't make too much fun of Applebees. My wife and 9 year old daughter enjoy the place. It's an OK restaurant. The one in Mundelein (my neck of the woods) actually has quite a lot of NIU stuff on the walls.

Back in the day when I was at NIU the big restaurant excursion was to Ponderosa. All you can eat steak, potato and desert bar. Plus there was always a couple dollar off coupon in the Sunday paper. We ate like pigs on our last supper.

Ponderosa is(was?) horrible and I am not sure how you could call it steak(though the salad bar was pretty good). Having said that, I have found a place that has WORSE steaks than Ponderosa(though the salad bar was decent).
