Yeah, my grandmother used to give me a shot of MD Grape Concord when I had the flu... That was the worst carp I ever ingested. She'd hold my cheeks and pour. I'm sure it's still under $10 a case.

That's pretty much how I was introduced to "Mad Dog"...Not sure it really did much for my illness but it certainly made me not worry so much about it 03-drunk

Leaping Horse Merlot (California)
Hollick Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot (Australia)
La Palma Merlot (Chile)
Farnese Sangiovese (Italy)
Masi Campofiorin (Italy)
Macullan Pinot Grigio (Italy)
J. Lohr Chardonnay (California)
Ironstone Symphony Obsession (California)
Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand)
Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand)

My wife is obsessed with this stuff. I don't like it as much as she does, but I remember it goes well with dishes that have butter or cream like an alfredo dish.

I really like the Oyster Bay and there are a bunch of really good New Zealand Sauv Blancs. The Nobilo is less expensive and almost as good; the Forrest Estate is similar in quality and price, and if you don't mind spending maybe $5 more per bottle, the Kim Crawford will blow the doors off of the Oyster Bay in my opinion.

You hit the nail on the head with the cream and butter. The reason that New Zealand Sauv Blancs go well with these types of dishes is because they generally don't have a lot of oak and are dry and crisp. I don't mean to get technical because the only thing that matters is whether you like it or not, but you can't go wrong with too many Sauv Blancs from New Zealand.

Sorry, I don't know anything about wine.

Also, "Buy Me In A Cardboard Box Instead Of A Bottle" should get you in that price range.

Actually, the "cardboard box" wines are gaining in popularity, even by some of the larger and more prestigious wineries. Supposedly, it is a great way to store the wine and gives extra life....I don't drink it regularly but know quite a few who do.

The boxes are cool, but a couple of summers ago I went the other way and started buying half bottles. Half bottles are awesome when you're having a decent meal but you have to run or when you go out at night and come home late and want a drink but aren't in the mood for a whole bottle.

A popular label that offers half bottle options for most of its varietals is Ironstone, and all of their wines are really good, inexpensive and easy to drink. The Symphony Obsession is a nice sweet white that is really good during the summer.

Many memories gone because of Mad Dog 20/20
Boone's farm at Wal-Mart $2.87 lol

Most wine I have tasted tastes like hairspray to me. I like a good red wine, but no blush or white. I would rather drink something that tastes good or not-as-bad. Coors lite suits me alot more than any wine I have ever tasted.

Maybe I'm just unrefined. Only time I buy wine is when I am entertaining females.

Is Blue Nun still around? I gave a bottle of that to my puppy love HS Girlfriend's parents because my parents used to drink it when I was young. Personaly, I hate red wine, can barely stand white wine, and simi-like white zen. But from what they told me, Blue Nun was a pretty good white wine for the $8+/-.

Interesting. Like I do with beer (you should see how my beer fridge in the garage is viewed in Arkansas), I prefer a variety of wines on hand. Since you certainly register as the resident expert, I will target the brand you mentioned and see what it entails.

Thanks, but I'm hardly an expert. I have been very lucky to have had the opportunity to taste a few thousand wines over the last few years shopping for the restaurant, and have always had knowledgeable staff and friends to help me out. Everything in the Ironstone catalog goes for between $12 - $18 and from experience you can get them in the US for around 60% of the cost.

I don't get caught up in what is expensive or supposed to be good or bad. If someone likes something, great; if they don't great; nobody else's opinion should matter or shape how they drink wine. Too many people are snobs when it comes to wine. My goal at the restaurant was to make sure that if someone wanted wine that they got something good instead of being intimidated and having a vodka - soda, or beer instead.

Big House Red is a pretty good 9.99 wine.

Might also want to try Piperwood Pinot Noir or Big Fire Pinot Noir.

The missus and me just drank a bottle of Crane Lake Shiraz ($3.99) last night with a pork tenderloin...the wine was really incredible and the tenderloin was sublime.

I will be on the lookout for it. Any bozo can pick out a $50 bottle of wine and be reasonably sure that it's good, but it is much more fun to find inexpensive wines that are really good.

May I ask how the tenderloin was prepared?

DallasTiger, you probably have, but I have found touring the wineries in Grapevine to be fun and have found some interesting Texas wines there. There are two walk-in and taste wineries downtown Grapevine right in the Main Street area.

It was a Costco-brand garlic and onion marinated monster-sized tenderloin...quite tasty, even though it wasn't one of my own homemade creations.

The wine was purchased at the liquor store next to the Costco on Winchester...Crane sells for $3.99 if you purchase two or more bottles (which is not an issue for us, as we drink wine like sailors on shore leave! 03-lmfao).

That's awesome. The Farnese Sangiovese is probably around $4 a bottle if you can find it and it's awesome. There is a South African Cab called KWV that is also amazing for around $5. If you guys are into Rose's, Beringer makes a very good White Zinfandel (lots of strawberries) for around $6.
