RE: St Mary's Thread
This guy did a pretty good job of summing us up;
Quote from St. Mary's board:
What you can expect from Kent State is defense, depth, and quickness. The Flashes are one of the top defensive teams in the MAC, holding opponents to about 42 percent field-goal shooting. They're also tops in the league in steals, with an average of 8 a game. (They recorded 15 more tonight against Buffalo.)
Kent's rotation goes about 8 or 9 deep, depending on how much Rashad Woods plays. As you figured out at the start of this thread, guard Al Fisher is one of the Flashes' top players. His strength is breaking down defenses and getting to the basket. His perimeter shooting is average, and he's prone to turnovers.
Kent's other two top players are forwards Mike Scott and Haminn Quaintance (known as "Q"). Scott is the team leader. He averages around 13 points and just under 6 rebounds a game. Q is the team's best defensive player and likely will be named MAC Defensive Player of the Year. He averages 10 points, nearly 8 rebounds, and 2 assists a game. He's also first in the conference in blocked shots and seventh in steals. Q's biggest problem is that sometimes he's not mentally into the game and, as a result, plays passively. I doubt this will happen against the Gaels because Q seems to be at his best against high-quality opponents.
An emerging player in Kent's starting lineup is guard-foward Chris Singletary. His scoring is now in double digits (10 per game) and he averages 3 boards. At 6-4/225 pounds, Singletary is a bull. He's good at taking it to the basket and either drawing the foul or dishing the ball off to one of the post players. Singletary has also developed into a solid defensive player. The major drawback in his game is that he tends to get into foul trouble.
Other Kent players:
Jordan Mincy - Sometimes starting point guard, sometimes back-up point guard. Very little offense but he's excellent on defense. Kent's best man-on-ball defender.
Rodriquez Sherman - Sometimes starting shooting guard, sometimes back-up shooting guard. Not much of an offensive threat but is a good defender.
Mike McKee - Three-point threat, though he hasn't been knocking down shots consistently.
Julian Sullinger - Undersized post player. He was solid last year off the bench, but is playing less this season in part due to Q elevating his game and the emergence of Singletary.
Rashad Woods - A transfer who's in his first season with Kent. He's an offensive player who can hit shots from the perimeter, but he's struggled so far this season and hasn't played much the last two games.
The Flashes aren't big, as the tallest player who sees quality playing time is 6-8. But what they lack in size, they make up with quickness and athleticism. Both Scott and Q can jump out of the gym. Expect an aggressive man defense and a lot of hustle from Kent. The Flashes' coach, Jim Christian, preaches defense and maximum effort, and it shows up in the team's play.
