Part I
West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart gave a rundown of all 23 recruits in the Class of 2008. Here are his comments on the first eight players listed in the initial segment of a three-part series.

“I’ll go home and break bread with the wife for the second time since I was hired,” Stewart said. “But that’s a great problem to have. I can’t say enough about everybody. It has been great. This is what we came up with, and we are very proud.”

On John Bassler, a 6-5, 285-pound offensive lineman out of Maryland: “I recruited old Johnny Bassler’s brother years ago. I saw him pitch as a 13-year-old and it scared me. He looked like a Babe Ruth up there. I told him then that he would be a great one for the Mountaineers some day. We are so blessed to have him on board.”

Bio: Coached by Bill Hyson at Francis Scott Key High School … two-time all-Monocacy Valley Athletic League on offense and defense … two-time all-Carroll County selection … named as an offensive lineman to play in the Super 22 all-star game, featuring the best players from the Baltimore metro area … also played basketball and baseball … son of Robert and Carol Bassler.

On Tyler Bitancurt, 6-0, 180-pound kicker from Springfield, Va.: “He came to camp last year and we were down to five kickers in the United States. We got all the films. We had all the guys in the computer. Then I told them to go back to their high schools and kick from the 30-yard line, because that is where we kick from. I don’t care if it’s raining, snowing, sleeting and I don’t care if you kick 100 balls or 10 balls. I want 10 kickoffs from the 30. They did that, and Tyler Bitancurt had some of the finest kicks I have ever seen. We kick up here in the cold weather. It was in November and all 10 went into the end zone or out of it. I said that was the guy. So we went after him. Paul Woodside said he is the one you need.”

Bio: Coached by Bill Renner at West Springfield High School … connected on 13-of-17 field goal attempts, including a 50-yarder, and made 49-of-50 extra points … the 13 field goals were the most in the state and tied him for the seventh-most in a season in state history … 70 of his 81 kickoffs resulted in touchbacks … had a 39.0-yard per punt average with a long of 60 yards … as a senior, he finished with 88 kicking points and had a two-year career total of 152 points … selected Washington, D.C. all-metro by the Washington Post as a senior …two-time first-team all-Patriot district punter and kicker … two-time first-team all-Northern Region punter … selected first-team all-Northern Region kicker as a senior … for his career, he finished with 15-of-20 field goals with a long of 50 yards, 107-of-108 extra point attempts, including consecutive streak of 70, 123 touchbacks on 147 kickoffs, and a 39.4-yard punting average with a long of 60 yards … had 29 punts land inside the opponent 20-yard line and 10 punts of 50 yards or more … three-year letterwinner in soccer … earned first-team all-district honors as a junior … son of Mauro and Teresa Bitancurt.

On Jeff Braun, a 6-5, 315-pound defensive lineman from Westminster, Md.: “A big, stout young man. He stayed on board through the whole transition and we are tickled about him. You can read about his strength and what he did. Jeff Braun is a fine young man. He’ll be a tremendous football player. We offered him his junior year after camp.”

On Ryan Clarke, a 6-1, 235-pound fullback out of DeMatha High in Maryland: “Great competitor. Sharp student and great young man. He came over here in the hopes that he might earn a scholarship some day. I said I want you to visit and I want us to get to know each other. I am in the people business. He won me over, and I am pretty hard to win over. His defensive coordinator played for me at William and Mary.”

Part II
Part II of our look at West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart’s comments on his first class.

The Mountaineer staff signed 23 players for its initial class under Stewart. Heavy in defensive players overall and linemen in particular, the class elevated itself from the lower 60s through the upper 30s rank-wise during signing day. Here is the second installment of a three-part series on Stewart’s thoughts on his new players.

Stewart, on Corey Freeman, a 6-3, 220-pound defensive lineman from Cleveland Heights, Ohio: “Neat young man. Steve Dunlap went up and did a fantastic job up there. Really gets off the ball well and has a chance to be an edge player for us in the 3-3-5 stack, and that’s what we need. He is fast. We went out and recruited some speed.”

Bio: Coached by Jeff Rotsky at Cleveland Heights High School … four-year letterwinner … as a senior, he finished with 91 tackles, 14.5 sacks and 30 tackles for loss … Blocked four field goals, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery … named first-team all-state … selected All-Lake Erie League first-team … a first-team all-district honoree … runs a 4.55/40-yard dash, has a 35-inch vertical jump and benches 310 pounds … son of Corey Locke and Pamela Sloan.

On Josh Jenkins, a 6-5, 305-pound offensive lineman from Parkersburg, W.Va.: “The pride of Parkersburg, one of the finest offensive lineman we will ever recruit. This guy aged coach (Doc) Holliday. He went from reddish to grayish to no hair in the last 26 days. We could not have gotten Josh Jenkins without Doc Holliday. They bonded very well and all the accolades you see are true. He is a special young man. We loved him in camp as a junior. He gave us a little gray hair, but it’s worth it. We thought he would be the bell cow of the linemen in the class. He is a tough competitor. We are thrilled he stayed home. He could have gone all over the country. He kept his word and that means a lot to us here.”

Bio: Coached by Bernie Buttrey at Parkersburg High School … top recruit in the state of West Virginia … first West Virginia player to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas … graded out at 98 percent for his senior season … collected 158 pancake blocks … finished with 113 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, seven sacks and four fumble recoveries … USA Today first-team All-American … Parade Magazine All-American team … a three-time AAA first-team all-state selection … three-time all-MSAC Conference honoree … helped lead the Big Reds to a 13-1 record and the AAA state championship in back-to-back seasons … runs a 5.2/40-yard dash and bench presses 400 pounds … also plays basketball … son of Deborah Johnson.

On Joe Madsen, a 6-4, 270-pound offensive lineman from Chardon High in Ohio: “Another camp guy. His family is from West Virginia. He impressed me. He has a motor that goes non-stop. I thought last year in camp those (line) guys were going to hurt each other. It was full-mode and never stop. He can play either side and we are probably going to play him offensive first because that is what he wants to do. I am thrilled to have him.”

Bio: Coached by Jim Dipofi at Chardon High School … two-way starter at defensive tackle and offensive tackle … three-year letterwinner and team captain … collected 59 total tackles, including 21 solo stops, five sacks and 18 tackles for loss … also had 16 assisted tackles, four forced fumbles and a fumble recovery ... selected first-team All-Ohio guard … first-team All-Premier Athletic Conference honoree … named first-team Northeast Lakes all-district … earned most valuable player honors at the West Virginia summer camp … helped lead Chardon to a 10-3 record and the first round of the playoffs as a junior … son of Eric and Reta Madsen.

On Donovan Miles, a 6-2, 225-pound linebacker from Virginia: “You hate to say the best or nicest or whatever [about a certain player]. But this is probably the nicest young man I have ever recruited. He plays like a man possessed and his high school coach played for coach (Jeff) Casteel. He can run. I went on Bus Four on the way to the Fiesta Bowl so I could call recruits. I called him and said, "Happy New Year", and [told him] to tell your momma Happy New Year and your coach, too. I do know that I am proud of you and that you stuck by your word. I want you to come to West Virginia. I don’t know if I will have a job. But the most important thing is you come to West Virginia and be the best you can be.”

On Ja’tavious Miller, a 6-0, 208-pound linebacker from Pahokee, Fla: “Man can this guy go. I asked his mother if he has always been like this. From the time he was little it’s been non-stop, full speed. You should see this guy in front of a huddle. He commands respect instantly. Wow.”

Bio: Coached by Blaze Thompson at Pahokee High School … finished with 109 tackles, eight sacks, 20 tackles for loss and two interceptions as a senior … registered 14 tackles against Newberry HS in the state championship game … two-time first-team 2B all-state … two-time 2B all-area … Palm Beach Post first-team small school all-area honoree … played in the Outback Bowl state all-star game and the North-South all-star game … helped lead the Blue Devils to back-to-back 14-0 records and the state 2B championship his junior and senior seasons … as a junior, he collected 125 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries … runs a 4.44/40-yard dash, has a 28.6 vertical jump and has benched 225 pounds 10 times … volunteered with elementary school tutoring and helped with hurricane clean-up … son of Lynora Fulmore.

On Chris Palmer, a 6-4, 290-pound defensive lineman out of Philadelphia: “He committed early and kept his bond. Bill Kirelawich is so high on this guy. As fast as he is, and you can see the vertical, he is girthy, like Tevita [Finau]. He is a big man. This is a big, strong youngster.”

Bio: Coached by Bill Sytsma at St. John Neumann High School … played both offensive and defensive lines … described as the quickest offensive guard in the Philadelphia Catholic School League … selected to the Harrisburg Patriot News Platinum 33 team … earned Scout.com and Super Prep All-American honors… offense averaged more than 400 yards a game in total offense, including 250 yards a game rushing … team had a 1,400-yard rusher … collected 64 tackles, seven tackles for loss and three sacks as a senior … earned All-Catholic League honors two years as a defensive lineman and one time on offense … selected to play in the Philadelphia city all-star game … as a junior, finished with 62 tackles, nine tackles for loss and had five sacks … runs a 5.0/40-yard dash, has a 29-inch vertical jump and benches more than 300 pounds … son of Rudy and Grace Palmer.

On Robert Sands, a 6-6, 205-pound safety out of Miami: “I told Doc walking out of the home, old buddy, you land that one and that’s the real deal. He committed to Pitt and we went in and Doc turned it. We had help in the school. Old Lorenzo Styles (a former WVU offensive lineman) is assistant principal there. He helped us and the community helped us. It was one of the finest home visits I was ever at. Doc, (RB coach) Chris Beatty and myself. You cannot believe what an athlete this is at 6-6, 205 pounds. This guy has as bright a future as any young man that has been here in years. This cat can play and he will be special. He will be a lot of fun and coach (Steve) Dunlap will have his hands full.”

Part III
Here is the final installment of a three-part series on Bill Stewart’s comments on his first class.

The 23 recruits make it among the largest group of signees in West Virginia history. Here, Stewart gives comments on four defensive and three offensive players, including quarterback Coley White, brother of current Mountaineer starter Patrick.

Stewart, on Bernard Smith, a 6-2, 220-pound defensive lineman out of Atlanta: “He will drive the mentors right out of their mind. He is a very high motor, high-end guy. When we put the film in one day it looked like sprinters coming out of the wooden blocks. It is unbelievable what explosion this guy brings to the table. He can flat get it and he is a treat. We need a little spice around here. Sometimes we get too serious. I sure like him.”

Bio: Coached by Jessie Soloman at Benjamin E. Mays High School … named to the Georgia Sportswriters’ Association Class 4A first-team all-state … earned All-Atlanta honors … had a team-leading 125 tackles, including 75 solo tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, three forced fumbles and four forced fumbles as a senior … led the state of Georgia in solo tackles … punted the ball 25 times for an average of 37.7 yards per punt … rated No. 4 rush end in Georgia by the Atlanta Journal Constitution … helped lead the Raiders to a 9-3 record, a second-place finish to Tucker High School in the conference standings and advance to the second round of the state playoffs … selected to play in the Georgia North-South All-Star Game …had a season-high 15 tackles in 25-0 win over Lakeside High School and four sacks in a 14-0 win over Miller Grove High School … selected honorable mention all-state class 4-A as a junior … led Benjamin E. Mays to a 10-3 record as a junior and advance to the second round of the state playoffs … son of Constance Nealey.

On Courtney Stuart, a 6-3, 220-pound safety from Phoenix College: “He looks identical to Ryan Mundy. I think and I hope, I wish I could say I know, he will play like Ryan Mundy. This guy is a good looking guy. He can make plays. He came because of what our defense can do. These safeties and corners in our defense have a real chance to go to pro ball."

Bio: Coached by former Mountaineer standout Dale Wolfley at Phoenix College … registered 56 tackles, four forced fumbles and one interception as a sophomore in 2007 … selected honorable mention all-Western States Football League … runs a 4.45/40-yard dash and benches 315 pounds … coached by John Wrenn at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz. … selected honorable mention all-state as a senior … helped lead Hamilton to a 12-1 record and an appearance in the state championship game … son of Greg and Lisa Smith.

On Jerome Swinton, a 5-9, 160-pound cornerback from Daytona Beach: “The best football player we have, and he is not a very big man. That speed right there, he is quick and explosive. The guy can run and he will hit you. It’s probably the best football player we recruited. This guy can play. I think the 34-inch vertical isn’t giving him nearly enough credit.”

Bio: Coached by Mark Beach at Seabreeze Senior High School … finished with 48 tackles and blocked a punt as a senior … a first-team Class 4A all-state defense selection … named all-Central Florida by the Orlando Sentinel … an All-Southeast Region selection by Super Prep … helped lead Seabreeze to a 12-1 record and an appearance in the state semifinals … collected 53 tackles, three interceptions and eight pass breakups as a junior … runs a 4.31/40-yard dash, has a 34-inch vertical jump and bench presses 265 pounds … son of Jerome Swinton and Diane Pollard.

On Tyler Urban, a 6-4, 240-pound tight end out of North Huntingdon, Pa.: “I drove 501 miles on Thursday night before an announcement to go into this young man’s home. It was worth every mile on a Thursday night in December. Maybe it bonded us. This guy was going to another school (Maryland) and we beat that school. He was committed and we go rolling. This is going to be a very good investment for the West Virginia University Mountaineers. He can be an Owen Schmitt-type player for us, playing fullback and tight end. I am thrilled. He dunks a basketball and I think about driving that night. It worked out well.”

Bio: Coached by Dan Conwell at Norwin Senior High School … as a senior, rushed for 510 yards on 80 carries and scored seven touchdowns as a fullback … registered 79 tackles and seven sacks … scored two touchdowns and two sacks in a playoff win over Woodland Hills … selected second-team all-state class 4A … Pittsburgh Tribune Review’s Terrific 25 … named all-WPIAL Quad-South Conference … helped lead the Knights to a 7-4 record and an appearance in the WPIAL quarterfinals … as a junior, he collected 70 tackles and seven sacks … rushed for 500 yards and a 6.2 yards per carry average … member of the National Honor Society … son of James and Debra Urban.

On Coley White, a 6-1, 175-pound quarterback out of Daphne, Ala.: “Let me assure you right now that Coley White was recruited because he is Coley White. Let’s get that right to the point. Coley White is a very, very talented young man. He can run. Oh, can he run. I asked Pat today if he was quicker. He would not answer me. I don’t know if he is quicker or faster. This guy has a chance. Let him be Coley White. I hope Bill Stewart will take that advice. This is a remarkable family and quality young man. Bo White (older brother) was on staff here and is at Glenville and I am hoping he will have a position here soon (quality control coach). This guy, the third, I hope he is the best of the three. He has it all ahead of him.”

Bio: Coached by Glenn Vickery at Daphne High School … brother of two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Pat White … accounted for almost 2,500 yards of total offense as a senior, 964 yards rushing and 1,500 yards passing … selected all-county and named conference player of the week … helped Daphne to an 11-2 record and a state 6A runner-up finish … named Daphne High School’s Student of the Month … also runs track … runs a 4.5/40-yard dash and bench presses 230 pounds … son of James and Vonametris White.

On J.D. Woods, a 6-2, 180-pound wide receiver from Naples, Fla.: “I did not know the guy was that good. I saw a basketball player with 1,000 points. He got that as a junior. This guy has a chance to be very, very special. He will stretch the field vertically.”

Bio: Coached by Dave Tanner at Golden Gate High School … played wide receiver in high school, collecting 54 catches for 851 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior … an all-state selection as a senior … earned first-team All-Southwest Florida accolades … a two-time first team all-district and All-Collier County Athletic Conference honoree … helped Golden Gate to a 6-5 finish and a first-round appearance in the state playoffs … collected 28 receptions for 584 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior … four-year starter on the basketball team … participates in the triple jump, the long jump and the 400m dash on the track team … earned honorable mention all-state honors as a junior in basketball and was all-district and all-conference in track … runs a 4.5/40-yard dash and bench presses 230 pounds … son of Freddie and Williamena McCrary and John Blackmon.

On Jorge Wright, a 6-3, 260-pound defensive lineman from Miami: “We went in there, Doc and myself, and what a great time. This guy was offered by some schools down south. We turned this guy from a couple SEC schools, and there was a school up north, not too close to us, that he turned down a visit and a full scholarship. He would not go on the visit. You talk about exciting for us. We were rolling down the highway. Doc worked his magic, and this young man is 4.7 (40) at 260 pounds.”

Bio: Coached by Rick Divita at Dr. Krop High School … registered 62 tackles and 18 sacks as a senior … selected All-Dade County honorable mention … selected to play in the Dade North-South All-Star game … helped team to a 7-3 record … two-year letterwinner in wrestling … runs a 4.7/40-yard dash and bench presses 275 pounds … son of Jorge and Dr. Ellen Wright.

“You know,” Stewart concluded, “Ten (signees) would have been fine. Bobby Ross at Georgia Tech signed 13 players his first year. A few years later he played for the big one. I asked why. He said he wanted to make sure and know about every single guy. I know we have the will to do that. I want to play for a big trophy. But Bobby Ross instilled in me to get character young men.”
