Red light camera's
Does anyone know if there are any red light camera's in Memphis? The ones that take pictures when someone runs a red light, then they just get issued a ticket. Being from another city it is unbelievable to me how many people run red lights in Memphis, especially around the campus area, I think the city would benefit from these greatly, and we could use all the money from it to help clean up the city. Just curious if there were already some around and what people thought.

There are no red light cameras in Memphis. There are reports that they initially increase rear end accidents, so the city has not looked into them.

We've got at least two of them...with plans for more in the works down the road.

In my mind, they're no big deal...they only ticket you if you're waaayyy bad in violation of the lights.

There are a few in Germantown, they have recently installed cameras at Walnut Grove and Perkins. Also there is one at Summer and White Station. I don't believe they send tickets, think they are there due to high amounts of wrecks at those intersections.

RE: Red light camera's
Any camera's you see at Memphis intersections are for detection purposes only. That means they track the volume of cars at the intersection and tell the traffic signal controller how long to hold the red and green light for each direction. At a traditional intersection the detection is handled by wires installed in the pavement called (induction loops). These wires pick up the metal in your vehicle which disturbs the induction field around the wires, which sends a message to the traffic signal controller to actuate the traffic signal. Video detection is used in areas where traditional loops are not ideal or consistently fail due to damage.

AH HA!!! There was just a story on the news right now, I was flipping through and caught it, Brian Heap at Eyewitnesses news set up his own news camera at a light in Cordova. (Germantown and Trinity) and about three people ran the red light everytime it switched. They would then try to follow some of the people and ask them why they ran it, that part was kind of funny, some guy named Raymond that worked at Loeb tried to bribe the reported into not putting the segment on the air, he actually pulled out money and started stuffing the guys pocket. During the investigation they caught 50 blatant red light runners (these ones weren't even close)

I hope this opens some peoples eye and we start seeing real red light cameras all around Shelby county.

Agreed. I'm as anti-big government, anti-big brother as one could possibly be, but this is a case where it is something that can save OTHER'S lives without disrupting your own. To me, that is the biggest difference b/t that and something evasive like helmet laws.

You think a camera is going to save people lives? What the hell is wrong with you? If somebody has to get somewhere a damn camera is not going to stop them.

Let's see...if people know that a traffic cam is observing their behavior at a busy intersection, they're more likely to drive conservatively through that intersection, thus reducing the likelihood of an unnecessary fender-bender.

Instead of personally attacking folks when they're having a reasonable discussion, you might want to actually offer up some FACTS to bolster your point of view....otherwise some of us adults around here may begin asking, "What the heck is wrong with YOU?"

RE: Red light camera's
There's another one at Germantown Road and Humphreys. The cameras take the picture if you go through the intersection after the light turns red. No one wants to challenge it even when the light turns yellow.

Wish they could do something about the people who park illegaly in front of the Supercenter...park in a regular spot like the rest of us.

Handicap spots in general... I hope I'm never disabled b/c I know I'll end up going to jail the day I end up killing some fat lazy piece of crap who is parked in a handicapped spot b/c they know no one in this city would ever think of writing them a ticket.
