RE: All-time greats from Memphis high schools
Three other all-time greats from the high-scoring Carver teams of the early-mid 60's, Frank Patillio, Marvin Brooks and Willie Gunn. Packed crowds came to see them and Carver's records were something like 33-3 and 33-2 back-to-back years.

We missed out on the best possible Memphis collegiate team when Walter Rucker and Johnny Neumann went off to UT and Ole Miss respectively. They were 1969 graduates with Larry Finch, Robinson et al and that Memphis team went to the NCAA championship losing to UCLA and Bill Walton in 1973.

There is no doubt in my mind that the offensive prowess of these two players would have made a significant difference in that game. We had Bill Laurie at off-guard (a non scorer) and no defense on the UCLA guards who had 23 assists. Rucker was from CBHS and was the most ferocious defensive player I have ever seen. He was the only player to hold Finch and Neumann to under 15 points/game in their high school careers and he did that 11 times. He also led the nation in free throw percentage with 95.5% and averaged over 20 ppg.

I believe Joey Ozment's father was Lanny Ozment, who was a helluva player at Westwood in the mid 60's. Really good.

Good stuff. I still laugh every time I see or hear mention of Jewell Burton. I went to school with him from 7-12, and as I recall, he got cut from the 7th and 8th grade teams at Coleman before finally making the team at Raleigh-Egypt.

Not from the freethrow line! I graduated from the Brothers in 92 and used to watch him hit a hundred in a row like it was nothing. Then he would shoot them one handed. I have never seen anything like it in my life.

William Harris? LOL One dimensional player and way too inconsistent. Kind of like James Bradley, never say a shot he didnt like, even if he was off. I would take David Metlik and his jump shot free throws over Harris.

RE: All-time greats from Memphis high schools
My classmate, Melvin Henderson, Germantown 1969, just passed away. I'm trying to put some information together about folks' memories of him.I think Germantown played Melrose in the regional finals at the Coliseum in the spring of 1969. That Melrose team included Larry Finch and Ronnie Robinson. Melvin enrolled at Germantown in the fall of 1967 after Mt. Pisgah was closed. Melvin also played football and competed in track. I think he was All-District at end in 1968. I think he won the high jump and the long jump in the District meet in the Spring of 1969. If anyone out there can confirm my recollection or add other details about his high school career, please let me know. Thanks!
