West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart has announced the hiring of Lonnie Galloway as the wide receivers coach.

“I’m really excited that Lonnie is joining the Mountaineer football family as the wide receivers coach,” Stewart said. “He has an outstanding reputation as a receivers coach, having worked at East Carolina and then winning national championships the past three years at Appalachian State. Lonnie is not only a great person with tremendous character but also brings new and innovative ideas that will help bolster our passing attack in our offensive structure. I can’t wait for him to get started.”

This marks the seventh addition to Stewart’s coaching staff, with the strength coach being the final position he needs to fill. Steve Dunlap (Assistant HC/S), Chris Beatty (RB) and David Lockwood (CB) were named Friday, Jan. 11, John “Doc” Holliday (Associate HC/Recruiting Coordinator/TE-FB) was announced on Saturday, Jan. 12, David Johnson (OL) on Wednesday, Jan. 16., and Jeff Mullen (Offensive Coordinator/QB) on Thursday, Jan. 24.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work at an outstanding institution as West Virginia University and for a great coach, Bill Stewart,” Galloway said. “Coach Moore, who I consider one of the top coaches in the nation at Appalachian State and Coach Stewart are great friends. Coach Moore can’t say enough good things about him so it is an honor that he asked me to be a member of his coaching staff. West Virginia has a great tradition, been a consistent winner, and I look forward to making a contribution to keep the tradition going.”

Galloway joins the West Virginia staff after serving as the wide receivers coach for the past three seasons at Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. During his three-year tenure at ASU, he has helped lead the Mountaineers to a 39-6 overall record, 18-3 in Southern Conference action, three conference championships and three national championships. Appalachian State also received a lot of national recognition for defeating No. 5 Michigan, 34-32, in Ann Arbor, the first week of the season.

This past season, he had 14 receivers finish with at least one catch during the season and collectively the group finished with over 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns. Hans Batichon led the team with 58 receptions for 819 yards and seven touchdowns, and Dexter Jackson had 30 catches for 688 yards and eight touchdowns. Batichon and Jackson received All-America recognition and Jackson was invited to play in the Senior Bowl and the East-West Shrine Game. In 2006, receiver William Mayfield led the receivers with 64 catches for 1,129 yards and five touchdowns. The receivers finished with over 2,600 yards and 18 touchdowns for the season. Mayfield started his career as a linebacker and Galloway mentored him as he transitioned to the receiver position. He left ASU sixth on the school’s all-time list with 1,483 yards in two seasons as a receiver. Jackson finished with 33 catches for 470 yards and three touchdowns. Jackson and Mayfield both garnered all-conference honors.

In his first season at ASU, he coached a trio of senior receivers that combined for 1,285 yards, nearly matching the 1,421 yards that the threesome combined for in their first three seasons with the Mountaineers. Prior to Appalachian State, Galloway was the receivers coach for two years at East Carolina. He coached Terrance Copper, an all-Conference USA receiver, who set the school single-season records for receptions (87) and receiving yards (897) in 2003. From 1996-2002, Galloway was the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Elon University in Elon, N.C. He helped lead the Phoenix to a 7-4 record in 1997 and 2000 and a 9-2 record in 1999. One of his receivers, Arekta Banks, was a two-time all-conference performer.

Galloway, a native of Eden, N.C., was a four-year letterwinner at Western Carolina from 1990-93. He passed for 5,545 yards during his career, placing him second on the school’s all-time list. He still holds the record for total offense in a career and ranks among the top 10 in seven other offensive categories at WCU. In 1995, he played one season for the Charlotte Rage of the Arena Football League. A 1994 graduate of Western Carolina, Galloway and his wife, Winslow, have two children, daughter, Anna, and son, Hayes.

i have to say i'm less than impressed with the staff stewart's assembled and they're losing recruits like a sieve, dickrod bolting has almost crippled their recruiting this year, they were on their way to a top 25 recruiting class. i know after stewart winning it was hard to not hire him, but i still feel bowden was the best fit, i can't really see him lasting very long and a couple of bad seasons under stewart could really set this program back. hopefully he proves me wrong.

The defense will be strong. I'm curious to see what the offense looks like.

I'm optomistic. But it's still early. Only time will tell.

Galloway was on John Thompson's ill-fated staff at ECU.....I met him a couple of times and he seemed like a good guy......I really can't say much positive about the staff he was part of here, however.....not much went right over those two horrible seasons (3-20) on either side of the ball - or at any position....
