Jim Brown / Tiger Woods / 'lynch'
I was born in 1963 and until a couple of weeks ago I never knew the word 'lynch' in and of itself was racist or had racial overtones like some other words I won't type. I really associated the wild west and bank robbers and horse thieves with lynchings and being strung up...seriously.
That being said, here's my take. Jim Brown grew up in a different time period when African-Americans (see I'm even scared to use the term 'blacks' now) were absolutely mistreated so I understand why he's still got a chip on his shoulder that will be there until the day he dies. I don't even blame him for it but he'd be far better off to let it go. He's upset with Tiger Woods for not making a bigger deal out of golf chicks 'lynch' statement.
Well, think on this. Tiger Woods is much younger and grew up in different racial 'era' than Jim Brown did. Maybe, just maybe, racial equality and racism in general is a whole lot better now than it was then. Maybe, Tiger, like me, didn't see a whole lot to be upset about because many of the things that so many African-Americans worked so hard and so long for have actually come to fruition. I would hope that the younger generations of AA and EA (European-Americans)don't understand why some of their elders get so upset about certain 'statements'.
Now, some minority leaders actually don't want the tension and strife to disolve becasue they use the 'us' vs. 'them' mentality to maintain their power base by keeping thier people angry and upset. But, I believe that over the next 10-20 years as the next generation comes into power, that we may actually see the real end of racial tensions.
We can only hope.

Maybe Tiger is of the state of mind that, the best way to progress socially is to take the "power" away from words like this. The power "lynch" holds is is perpetuated by people's reaction to it. I think Tiger behaved commendably by forgoing conflict in this situation.

I hope that's not the only reason he chose to basically not participate in the process of vilifying another person who very obviously did not intend anything 'off-color' by her statement.
I'm still curious about the word itself. If she'd made the same comment about Phil Michelson would anybody have even said anything much suspend her for two weeks?
Again, there's alot of money to be made and power to hoard by keeping the racial pot stirred.

How can Jim Brown turn this into money?
I agree it was a poor choice of words, and a horrible cover, but what was Tiger supposed to do? Shut the whole network down.

Tiger is like 1/4 african american. His father was only about 1/2. Its not his job to be socially conscious on every issue. The 1st amendment allows us freedom of speech. We also have a right to remain silent if so need be.

Not Jim Brown. POLITICIANS....The bane of EVERY MAN'S existance.
It's always about power and money. Jim Brown comes from a different era...as I said I get why he's overly sensitive. Of course, it did get his name back in the news...........

I disagree......this forum repesents a GREAT cross section of Memphis. If we can't discuss things like this we'll never come to terms with them....either as individuals or as a society.

Tiger and the lady who said it are friends so Tiger knew it didn't have any undertones like some people wish it did.

That's what is so hilarious about this non-event.
Now, IMHO, the Golf Channel looks like idiots for suspending Tiger's friend Kelly Tilghman.
But you are right, there are those who would thrive on stuff like this, and I bet they are very disappointed that they don't have another needless cause to champion.

That's for sure.
Sooner or later, we've got to drop this PC barrier so that sensitive issues can be resolved, and not just swallowed out of fear of some distorted public opinion.

Tiger handled this "crisis" like he handles the rest of his public and private life...with total professionalism and class...end of story.
