That won't happen for some time. UC spent hundreds of millions for campus upgrades, housing, Varsity Village, Athletic Offices, and grabed land via eminent domain, over the past 5 years. UC needs to buy down that debt first.

I don't like spending that much money for an extra 5,000 seats. I would rather see a plan that expanded closer to 45-50k.

I think alot of the initial plans were before this past season. From what i heard it was commisioned about 2-2.5 years ago. If they keeps selling out the stadium with increased season ticket holders then it will allow them to think much larger for seating base. The main addition to that stadium for UC is the box seats. But as stated above, with all the debt they have it will be on hold long enough to have some other revisions to the stadium. I agree, if you take that same model and bump it to 45-50k, then i think more will be open to that option.

For those interested, you can see where the new basketball arena would fit into UC's campus, in relation to the Shoe. It looks like it would be E/NE of the Shoe, based on what the article says would be demolished.

http://www.uc.edu/architect/documents/Lo...ticsbw.pdf

This really may be down the line as all I hear about while currently living near UC is how they are debt-full and cash-strapped at the current time. However, the Shoe is basically a dump to put it bluntly. It's the worst big-time school basketball arena I've seen in terms of seating arrangements, sight lines, and concourse design. Adding seats to Nippert, if needed, would be great as well...if they also included expanded concourses!

The Shoe is not very fan friendly and UC was given $$$ to build it only because it was planned and designed as a multi-purpose athletic facility, not BBall only. Nonetheless it is better than the downtown or the Gardens.

I agree that the location of the Shoe and this potential new arena can't be beat. UC has a great central location for basketball, football, and baseball in the middle of campus. That location should only help in continuing to increase football attendance from the student side of things.

Within the last hour I read the comments from Mike Thomas regarding this study. For those that haven't seen them, it was commissioned before he became AD, and finished after his arrival. He sounded like the study was not going to be released by the school if it hadn't been leaked, and that any aspect of the plan was well down the pipeline.

He said a study of rehabbing the Shoe would have to be done as well before any new arena was built. That sounds like the prudent thing to do, but I doubt any UC fans would disagree with me when I say a new arena being built, with the Shoe becoming some kind of practice facility, would be the best solution for the basketball program....assuming the money is there down the line.

From what I have read, they have given up on a rehab of the Shoe. The buildings near by are too close, not to mention utility tunnels. The cost of rehabbing it was about the same as a new arena as well, if I remember correctly.
