Please. Basketball players play 30 to 40 games. I doubt playing 5 less games is going to help anyone in the classroom or tire them any more. One thing I hate are when people say we have to graduate these players. These players have to graduate themselves by studying hard and doing well in the classroom.

He's asking for eight but knows he will settle for four. That's the number he'll need for a plus one.
I think the Plus one model is perfect. Four of the six BCS conferences could get a shot at the title each year instead of only two.

RE: UGA president is calling for an eight-team playoff
Quote:The president of the University of Georgia is calling for an eight-team playoff system for college football's top division, saying the Bowl Championship Series -- which left Georgia out of its championship game -- has become a "beauty contest largely stage-managed by the networks."

i find it funny that he'd say this, yet only propose that eight teams should go. obviously his plans don't include the non-bcs schools. doesn't that make him guilty of the same thing he's criticizing the bcs for??

he's right that we need a playoff, but he's not factually correct when he says the tv stations determine who plays for the bcs title game. fox had nothing to do with it. coaches, harris voters and computers pick the top two teams. it's true that the other bowls are basically just invitationals so teams get picked for all sorts of reasons, but fox did not keep georgia out of the national title game.

all FBS university presidents are going to vote on this and over 75% will have to agree on it. no way an eight team playoff gets through unless the non-bcs conferences have some sort of access to it. i know the sun belt sucks, but when it comes to ncaa bylaws they're just as important as notre dame. what's in it for them if they aren't even going to be included??

16 teams is not too many. that's how many fcs plays. i don't think you'd find too many people saying patriot league schools like fordham and holy cross or other schools such as richmond are soft on academics. they get it done, and they get it done before february.

div3, which consists mainly of small, liberal arts colleges with respectable academics, has a 32 team playoff. it can be done. the argument about academics is crap. the games are on saturdays and school isn't in session. they play baseball. baseball is on the road more than anyone and their season overlaps final exams. if they're so concerned about academics then they should slash baseball. i'm not saying any school should do that. i'm just making a point.

RE: UGA president is calling for an eight-team playoff
He could be talking about a playoffs with the same qualification for indy's and non-bsc as the current system. Top 12 in the ratings. If you include the non-bcs and have a special entry for Notre Dame you'll see #3 and #4 ranked teams left out of an 8 team playoff. Off course, if we conclude that you must win your conference it doesn't really matter. In that case bring in two non-bcs or Indy's.

Not going to happen any time soon though.

mpurdy22 Wrote:What's wrong with going back to 3 non-conference games (and I think no more than 2 home non-conference games should be allowed) to open a week for a playoff game. Maybe even start a week sooner. The 6 BCS-conference champions and the 2 highest rated non-BCS conference champions are fielded for the 8 team playoff.[Yes you have to win your conference to be eligible] The first round is at the home of the top 4 seeded teams in that "12th" game two-weeks after the regular season then have the traditional time off for the Cotton Bowl, Sugar, Orange and Fiesta as they host the semi-finals followed by the Championship at one of those sites.

The rest of the teams in the country are open to bowl selection as in the past and the Rose Bowl can get Pac-10 #2 vs Big-10 #2.

This year?:

(8)BYU @ (1)Ohio State
(7)Hawaii @ (2) LSU
(6)Boston College @ (3) USC
(5) West Virginia @ (4) Oklahoma

Rose Bowl: Illinois vs Arizona State

You are fooling yourself if you think an 8 team playoff will consist of two nonBCS teams. Unless they make it mandatory that ALL conference champions get in and the BCS boys would not allow that.

If the Georgia President is really sincere, then this is a fair plan. Otherwise let's just be done with it and reduce the #of Div 1a schools to about 32 and beat each other up and crown one of them king at the end of the year, because with the system in place the rest of the schools like Miami (OH) or TCU or BYU or Memphis or even an Indiana or a Baylor are all chasing a title that they will never be allowed to have and playing the game is pointless. Seems like unless you have a stadium that sells out at 70,000 plus and/or if you can't bring 20,000 fans to a Title game, you are not wanted.

"If one of those bowls chooses not to participate, another game could be found to fill the void," he said.

The other BCS conferences subtley telling the Rose Bowl to go screw itself.

I wouldn't bother to tell them. I'd just leave them out in the cold to wonder what happened.

How can you run a playoff with #1 [OSU] & #5 [USC] playing in the Rose Bowl. Depending on how they do selections, Ariz St would be #8 seed. using the results of the bowls, LSU run could have been Haw, Missouri, & Georgia.

Ohio State was not the best team in the nation. Their number one ranking was strictly due to playing absolutely nobody, even within their own conference.

Big 10 and PAC 10 are full of thierselves! If the rest of 1A football has a 8-team championship, the Rose Bowl becomes the NIT! So they will play or will die just like Notre Dame is now, 04-cheers
