OT: Savannah State scores 4 points total in 2nd half
You know it's bad when fans of the opposing team start yelling "Mercy Bucket", LOL. I feel bad for these guys, that is a new level of futility.

But seriously... how can you only score FOUR points in an entire half???? Jeez.

- - - - -

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Shot after shot clanged off the rim. Passes went to the wrong team, leading to easy baskets at the other end.

Fans started yelling "Mercy bucket!" in hopes that Savannah State could find some way to get the ball in the basket at least once.

Finally, one did, though it wasn't enough to avoid the record books.

Kansas State set two NCAA records and tied another by holding Savannah State to four points in the second half in an 85-25 rout Monday night.

Kansas State (10-4) hounded the Tigers on the perimeter and pushed them away from the basket inside from the opening tip, holding them without a field goal during a seven-minute span of the first half to build a 16-point lead.

But that was nothing.

Savannah State (8-13) missed its first 15 shots of the second half, falling behind 72-22 as Kansas State opened with a 35-1 run. Joseph Flegler finally ended the drought with 5:48 left, hitting a 3-pointer from the wing, and the Tigers figured to at least get a couple more baskets.

But nothing else fell.

The Tigers finished the second half 1-for-23, breaking the NCAA record for worst shooting percentage and fewest points in a half since the shot clock was introduced in 1986. The one field goal also tied the mark for fewest in a half.

The previous records were set just last week, when Pennsylvania went 1-for-17 (5.9 percent) and scored six points in a 60-30 loss to Florida Gulf Coast. Savannah State shot 15.5 percent overall, making just nine field goals -- four from 3-point range.

Kansas State set records for lowest shooting percentage by an opponent and fewest points allowed at Bramlage Coliseum -- one short of the school record -- and missed the record for largest margin of victory by one point.

The defensive show overshadowed an impressive performance by Michael Beasley, who had 25 points and 10 rebounds on the heels of the worst game in his short college career.

One of the best players in the country so far this season, Beasley leads the nation in rebounding and ranking in the top five in scoring. But after 12 straight double-doubles, the burly freshman had a letdown against Xavier in his last game, hitting just 1-of-6 shots and scoring five points, never a factor from the opening tip.

Beasley was back to being his dominating self against Savannah State, hitting an array of midrange jumpers, bulling his way to the basket for lay-ups and three-point plays. He shot 9-of-11 and made all seven of his free throws, helping the Wildcats close out their nonconference schedule with an easy win.

Bill Walker and Dominique Sutton added 12 points each for Kansas State.

Flegler had eight to lead Savannah State.

Tigers Upset Southern Miss.

January 4, 2008
SAVANNAH, Ga- Savannah State started the 2008 portion of their home slate by breaking a two-game losing streak with a 61-56 victory over Southern Mississippi in Tiger Arena before a crowd of 347.

The Tigers entered the contest losers of six of their last seven games saw all 10 players that entered the game score at least two points.

Chris Linton led SSU (8-12) with 12 points and seven rebounds while Lazarius Coleman added 11 points and nine boards. Starting guards Joseph Flegler, Patrick Hardy and Anthony Jones each chipped in nine points.

Savannah State, which led the entire way, scored the first seven points of the game. USM, who got on the scoreboard when Jeremy Wise hit two free throws at the 16:26 mark, did not get their first field goal until Andre Stephens dunked the ball with 10:43 remaining to make the score 16-4.

By the time half the period was over, the Tigers controlled the contest 23-4.

The Golden Eagles cut their deficit to 13 with 3:36 left but went into the half down 35-20.

The Tigers shot 57.7 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes while Southern Miss was only 8-for-23 and missed all three 3-point attempts.

In the second half, USM came out more focused as they started the half with a 15-4 run that cut Savannah State's lead to 39-35 after five minutes of play.

The Tigers were able to increase their lead to 50-41 but seven unanswered points by Southern Miss made the score 50-48 with 6:23 on the clock.

A layup by Coleman stopped the bleeding. Two free throws each from Jones and Linton gave SSU breathing room at the 1:21 mark and a 58-51 advantage.

Free throws by Wise pulled Southern Miss to within four but a free throw by Hardy with 15 seconds left sealed the win for SSU.

Wise led USM (8-6) with 13 points.

The Golden Eagles shot 44.4 percent from the field in the second period while SSU dipped to 6-of-15 shooting. The Tigers did hit 13-of-14 free throw attempts.

It seems odd that USM would be playing a road game at Savannah State. They are a D-1 independent and one of the worst teams in the nation year in and year out.
