No, that is not what a law is.

Yes, some theories are more plausible than others. So since you chose evolution, which theory is more plausible than evolution?

Relativity
Sorry, you misunderstood (my mistake), which theory explains observed biological diversity and the known fossil record better than evolution?

And by the way, Relativity? Which one General or Special? Because you know, they have great explanitory power, but they do break down and do not work at the atomic level.

Quote:And its not that I don't think evolution exists, I think there is enough data to see there is evolution occurring. I just don't think everything evolved from primordial ooze and a lightning bolt.
That's fantastic, because evolution says exactly nothing about the origin of life. Lightning bolt and amino acids combining has nothing to do with evolution. That goes the same for panspermia or even God breathed. Evolution says nada, zilch, absolutely nothing about how life first began. Darwin's book was titled "On The Origin of the Species" not "On The Origin of Life".

EDIT:
By the way, I've been meaning to ask, who's the chick in the blue bikini bottoms? Arguing with you, blah, is so very enjoyable. 04-cheers

RE: Huckabee on the "Bookshelf"
That is the most common misconception among today's kids. Even our "can do engineer" messes it up. A theory will never graduate into a law. A law is a set of observations. A theory proposes an explanation to these observations. A theory has never been disproven and has been tested many times over.

I know you didn't mean it the way it sounds, but theories have been disproven. Once that happens something better must replace that theory. Until that happens, the disproven theory is still used for the conditions where it is valid. See Relativity and Gravity.

From my bio text... Postlewait and Thompson

"Constructing a Theory"

When a set of related Hypotheses is confirmed to be true many times over, and it can explain a great amount of data, scientists often reclassify it as a theory. SOme examples include the quantum theory, the cell theory, or the theory of evolution. People commonly use the word theory in a different way than scientists use the word. People may say "it's just a theory" suggesting an idea is untested, but scientist view a theory as a highly tested generally accepted principle that explains a vast number of observations and experimental data.

If a theory is disproven it is reclassified. A scientific theory has never been disproven.

RE: Huckabee on the "Bookshelf"
Mach, scientific theories have been disproven. See: Obsolete Scientific Theories and Dr. Torch used to like to point out Phlogiston Theory. So yes scientific theories have been disproven. But I think the point to take home from all of this is that this is part of how science works, it is a self correcting process. When a hypothesis or theory is shown to be incorrect, science throws it away and moves on to that which explains better.

Back to my original point, Huckabee says he would take God's word over science because God doesn't change. Well from a scientific point of view that's a bad thing. If scientists still subscribed to Galileo's view of how the solar system worked, satellites would be crashing into planets instead olanding on them, or better yet zipping off into space never to be heard from again because the calculations do not work as well as Kepler's. And that goes the same for Newtonian theory of gravity vs. Relativity. Some day, the theory of relativity may also be supplanted by something with even more explanatory power. If Kepler, or Newton, or Einstein had said, "These calculations cannot be correct, because the Bible says different." we may have never tried to send spacecraft up for fear of hitting the firmament unless the windows were open.

That is why I can't vote for Huckabee. He is saying no matter the evidence, he will base his decisions on the feeling in his gut and what he thinks that God is telling him. That's bad thinking, and if we're going to send more soldiers off to war, I don't want him ignoring the evidence to fit his perception.

It's only a bad thing if the thing that doesn't change isn't always correct.

I'm not sure who that is...

BTW, it feels more like having a civil discussion than an argument to me. Our conversations never seem to have that "I know you are, but what am I" type feel that many times accompanies "discussions" in the spin room.

Glad to hear that. I fear that I come across as pompous at times (probably because I can be when I get on subjects that I feel passionately about). I didn't mean "argue" with a bad connotation; maybe debate is a better word.

Yeah, I don't know that anyone ever said "It is a scientific law that the Sun revolves around the Earth." But, according to the definition of a scientific law as a description of observations in nature, we can say that it was a law at the time.

Thanks!

Although I got out of teaching after only a few years, I have nothing but respect for those in the profession. Many of them can "do" but find it much more rewarding to teach others.
