The Mighty WAC and the BCS Party
A lot of mags are predicting that Boise will crash the BCS party this year. I see a lot of WAC teams making a run for the Bowl.

Of course, this would be great for the WAC if it happens.

What advantages will come our way if a WAC team makes the BCS Bowl?

1. Guaranteed 4 Bowls Games.

2. A la la money for each WAC school.

3.

Exposure, money and conference stability are the biggest two, IMO. Boise St has a better shot to do this than anyone and we need them to do it, if we want to be respected accross the country.

I have nothing against Boise or Fresno but I really think the very best outcome for the WAC and it's name recognition is for some WAC school other than BSU or FSU to crash the BCS party..

In football the notion out there is the WAC is Boise, Fresno and the 7 dwarfs..

The WAC needs other schools to step up..Ideally, of course, that school should be Nevada, just because..However, if it were some other WAC school that would be helpful too..

Which your kids certainly gave the lie to last season (as did the "other" Bulldogs).

I am getting more and more confidant of the WAC's ability, top to bottom, to improve its facilities, marketability (and market share that that represents), and product on the field over the next 2-5 years as the "newbies" get acclimated. Of the folks that've been here a while, only the Spartanoi have failed in the promise thus far: there's no reason to believe the newbies are destined to remain of a kind with San Jose; indeed, there's more precedent for folks raising their game upon acceptance to the WAC than for remaining "success challenged."

I remember Utah making a BCS run and as teams were preparing to play the Utes, fans were saying things like "gee, I'd like to win but we sure don't want to spoil their chances of a BCS game". I wanted to puke. No such sympathy when TCU was making a run, or when Boise went undefeated. Boise plays with a bulls eye on their backs and thats the way it should be. We sure didn't have any second thoughts about knocking off Fresno when they were ranked #8. MWC has the worst fans.

Spuds, I agree that there is that perception. But we can't change that perception if the rest of the bunch doesn't do well in OOC. Boise St wins their OOC games and Fresno St wins the games that they should win and loses closely to the teams they shouldn't beat. Fresno St gains respect by taking USC to the wire, despite the fact that they don't win the WAC. Boise St gains respect by winning the WAC nearly every year.

I'd love to see any other WAC team go undefeated. Any undefeated WAC team would do at this point. But, as a whole, for respect we need the conference to win games from top to bottom in OOC.

Anybody crashing the BCS party would be great news for the WAC. Regardless of the perception. Better ratings, better press, more money.

I agree it would be better if NMSU crashed the party than Fresno or Boise ;-) - just because it would show the league's depth - but for now I will be ecstatic if any WAC team makes it.

That's why the games are played on the field and not off of media hype. WAC fans, at this point BSU,FSU, Nevada, Hawaii and La Tech have a chance to be that exclusive BCS Bowl team. And who knows, somehow another WAC team could pull off the season of the decade.

I think most national experts pick the Broncos, because they have a schedule that could allow them to go undefeated.

Can Lousiana Tech beat Nebraska and Clemson on the road?
Can Nevada beat Arizona State on the the road?
Can Hawaii beat Alabama on the road?
Can Fresno beat Oregon?

Sure, but the chances of Boise State beating Utah on the road and Oregon State at home are probably easier tasks. Add Fresno, Hawaii and La Tech all playing at Bronco Stadium and the Broncos probably have the best chance of winning the most games of any WAC school.

That is why the Broncos are getting all the media love....

If Tech manages to go over .500 this year, they should begin to get some media attention because of the age of the team. Not to mention, this year should set us up for some more manageable schedules.

I think Hawaii has a good shot at beating Alabama. But,...we'll see.

Fresno should beat Oregon if they can stop their RB.

Nevada? This is going to be a good game

Fresno St did lose a lot of respect after the USC game because of the way they played games. Some media people even wrote about when Fresno lost here to the Wolf Pack it was the ultimate insult to Fresno. I think unless another team makes a run year after year after year, it will always be Fresno and Boise in the talks. Actually I have seen some media mention about Hawaii make a run this year along with Boise and Fresno.

However some big OOC conference wins will sure turn some media heads and maybe have them looking more into the WAC.

Hawaii could be the favorite in 2007 when they play Fresno and Boise St on the islands....

The winner of Boise State/Utah has a good chance, and I'm rooting for the Broncos.

TCU also has a decent chance based on last year, and BYU/Nevada/Fresno State/UTEP all have outside chances as well. The MAC has really tough schedules, so I'm not expecting much from them besides an upset or two (no Top 25 rankings, at least not for more than a week or two sometime early in the season, or in the middle perhaps).

Basically, it's between the winner of the MWC/WAC/C-USA/MAC and a bunch of 2nd-place BCS schools. I hope a non-BCS makes it. I think we will too.

Between the MWC and the WAC, I think we can have 4-5 Top 25 teams this year (TCU, Boise State, Utah, BYU, and Nevada or Fresno State). Last season, it was just TCU (that may have been different if BYU, BSU, and/or FSU hadn't barely lost their bowl games).

If you assume that a mid-major has to go undefeated to be involved in the extra BCS game, which schedule would you choose? Let's assume that mid-major getting the BCS bone will go undefeated, at home, regardless of who they play.

WAC Candidates:
Boise St
@Wyoming, @Utah, @NMSU, @Idaho, @SJSU, and @Nevada
Fresno St
@Washington, @Utah St, @LSU, @Boise St, @La Tech and @SJSU
Nevada
@Fresno St, @Arizona St, @UNLV, @Hawaii, @Idaho, and @La Tech
Hawaii
@Alabama, @Boise St, @Fresno St, @NMSU, @Utah St

MWC Candidates:
BYU
@Arizona, @Boston College, @TCU, @Air Force, @Colorado St and @Utah
TCU
@Baylor, @Utah, @Army, @UNLV, @New Mexico, and @Colorado St
Utah
@UCLA, @Utah St, @SDSU, @Wyoming, @New Mexico, and @Air Force

C-USA Candidates:
Southern Mississippi
@Florida, @Central Florida, @Tulsa, @Virginia Tech, @Memphis and @Tulane + C-USA Champ Game
Central Florida
@Florida, @Marshall, @Houston, @Memphis, and @Tulane+ C-USA Champ Game
Tulsa
@BYU, @Navy, @Eastern Carolina, @Memphis, @Houston, and @SMU
UTEP + C-USA Champ Game
@SDSU, @New Mexico, @Houston, @Tulsa, @UAB, and @Marshall +C-USA Champ Game

Of all of those candidates, here's how I'd rank the schedules (Top 5) from least difficult to most difficult:
1. Tulsa
2. Boise St
3. UTEP
4. TCU
5. Utah

Given what Boise St did in 2004 with a similar conference schedule and the same QB they have now, I'd place my bets on them. Tulsa, second and TCU third (given that I think TCU is a better team than UTEP).

I believe that any C-USA/MAC/Sunbelt team would have to go undefeated to make a BCS game. Boise State and Fresno would have a chance with only 1 loss. Same with TCU, Utah, and BYU. Schools like Nevada, Hawaii, SDSU, UTEP, Tulsa, and UCF have been bad for a while and need to build up their cred. Actually, BYU has been bad for a while, but lucky for us we're kinda like the Notre Dame of the have-nots (we sometimes automatically get more credit than we deserve just because of who we are... not that we are close to being a Notre Dame-level school right now).

Who knows if a 1-loss Utah would be ranked higher than an undefeated Nevada? This "race for the BCS 'throw-the-dog-a-bone Bowl slot" will be interesting to watch, this year and in the future.

If Boise State beats Utah on the road (and I'm assuming that they will beat Oregon State at home), I think they're in (and vice-versa, assuming that Utah beats UCLA as well). Then again, I say the same thing about TCU and Texas Tech. Each school's in-conference-mates will try to derail them though. BYU only has a chance if they beat Arizona (road game), Tulsa, Utah State, and Boston College (road game).

I see Fresno State losing to Oregon, LSU, Boise State, and Nevada. Nevada will lose to Arizona State and Boise State. S. Miss will be out due to the Florida/Virginia Tech games. UCF won't beat Florida either. UTEP has two very tough games against SDSU and New Mexico. They could win either or lose either. They also have a game at home against Texas Tech I believe. Ignoring home games is stupid and pointless, as the most important factor is the opponent, not the location. The Miners won't beat the Red Raiders.

Tulsa can win every game except @BYU. But even the top C-USA teams usually lose 2-3 games in conference. And yes, Tulsa can beat BYU, but I don't like to think about it. I think that BYU wins by 10. Navy should be a win though (the Midshipmen will be down this year). IF Tulsa beats BYU, then the race is on between them, Boise State, TCU, and Utah.

It should be fun. Let the best team win!

The only teams that have a shot at the BCS with only one loss are TCU and Fresno St, IMHO. They're the only two that get enough hype to do it. Fresno St would probably have to beat either LSU or Oregon and only lose to LSU or Oregon. TCU would probably have to lose at Utah and beat Texas Tech at home. Any other scenario for TCU would be deadly, IMO.

I think the most likely one would be TCU because of the way they played last year and I think are a candiate this year for that.

Then you would have to go with Boise and Fresno but the question for Boise would be do you have that big game on the schedule this year to impress the polls and stats and I don't see it.

Fresno does, so they might have a better chance than Boise.
