STR: Cutcliffe interviewing with Duke
Thought this might be news to some of you who follow this former Ole Miss HC.

From The Tennessean (with interesting message board posts, I might add) LINK :
Quote: UT assistant Cutcliffe interviews with Duke

Tennessean Staff Reports

Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe was in Durham, N.C., interviewing for Duke's head coaching job Wednesday, the Associated Press reported, citing unidentified sources.

Cutcliffe's agent, Jimmy Sexton, declined to comment.

Cutcliffe, 53, has been on the UT coaching staff for 17 years, including six seasons as offensive coordinator.

He left UT after the 1998 season to become coach at Mississippi but returned as UT's offensive coordinator before the start of the 2006 season. While at Mississippi, the Birmingham, Ala., native was selected Southeastern Conference coach of the year in 2003 by his fellow coaches.

Ted Roof was dismissed at Duke on Nov. 26 after compiling a 6-45 record over four-plus seasons. The Blue Devils went 1-11 in 2007, losing all eight of their ACC games.

Vanderbilt Coach Bobby Johnson also interviewed with Duke earlier this week but was not offered the job and decided to remain with the Commodores.

Duke would be crazy to hire him. He is not head coaching material and proved that at O M. He isn't much of an Offensive Coordinator either IMO.

If you click the link and open the message board at The Tennessean, you'll find many UT fans would agree with you.

Wasn't he like the second most winingest coach at O.M. in their history?

On December 2, 1998, Cutcliffe was hired as the head football coach at Ole Miss. Cutcliffe had success at Ole Miss, where he recruited Eli Manning, son of Ole Miss player Archie Manning and brother of Peyton Manning, to play quarterback. In 2003, Cutcliffe tied LSU for the West Division title and a win in the Cotton Bowl. Record of 44-29 as HC of OM.

I think the record speaks for itself. Obviously sucked as an HC at OM.......01-wingedeagle

By 1990 Cutcliffe was coaching the position he is now so well known for, quarterbacks. In 1993 Cutcliffe was promoted to offensive coordinator. As coordinator, Cutcliffe helped lead the Vols to two SEC Championships and a National Championship.

He has been a terrible OC as well......01-wingedeagle

Newsflash...Cutcliffe is a good coach!

Why would anyone coach football at Duke? From what I hear their facilities are just down right horrible.

As if Duke could attract head coaching material. They hit their lottery with Spurrier. Cut would be a great hire for them. He'd be done in a few years, but so is every other coach.

RE: STR: Cutcliffe interviewing with Duke
Actually, I think Cutcliffe would be a bad hire for Duke. His offense (which he isn't changing) relies on having enough talent on the O-line and in the backfield to be able to establish the run against the opponent and then work the pass off the run. Without the ability to establish the run, his offense doesn't work.

At Duke, in order to be able to establish the run, you can't just run right at people, because you'll never have bigger, better talent up front or in the backfield.

They'd have done much better to hire someone like Paul Johnson who adapts his offense to play to the strengths of his team. Or to hire an up and comer from the lower ranks that does the same. Recruiting ability won't matter a bit for Cutcliffe, because no one can recruit to Duke. But his inability to get creative offensively will hurt him at Duke. At Ole Miss, he inherited an offense with a lot of NFL talent and therefore was able to make it work early on. And then he had Eli, which made his offense work. When he no longer had a solid drop back QB and no longer had a line or RB that could establish the run on its own, his offense struggled. At UT, you can afford to run that style of offense, because they can get the talent to be able to run it. But it won't work at Duke.

They would be better off trying to sign up an athletic high school QB with a mediocre arm and putting him in a triple option or spread option set to try to fool defenses with misdirection. Lining up and trying to knock teams off the ball won't work for Duke.

RE: STR: Cutcliffe interviewing with Duke
TTT: Okay it's not STR; it's NTR. Happy now?? 03-wink

Maybe the bigger question is: Would Cutcliffe be making a mistake to leave UT with his offensive strategy geared towards the kind of talent UT draws? Duke may be offering him a sizable paycheck. But in the end, is it worth it for him if/when he fails after 4 years? Will the back door at UT still be open for him if he fails at Duke or would he just retire?

(Sorry, that's three questions.)

Bruiser,
How many opponents boards do you post on and do you ever make a post that's not a dissertation?
