Maisel's Take on Meineke
"There is a bit of payback involved in the Meineke Car Care Bowl's selection of UConn over Cincinnati. It would seem as though the Charlotte bowl would select the Bearcats, who defeated the Huskies, 27-3. But the 2004 Continental Tire Bowl snubbed UConn, succumbing to pressure from the Atlantic Coast Conference to select Boston College, which was leaving the Big East after the 2004 season to move to the ACC. That didn't sit well with the Big East or UConn. Nothing against Cincinnati, but the Meineke owed UConn one"

Now that makes perfect sense to me. I understand.

It helps explain 2005, too.

I didn't know that UConn and USF got snubbed like that. Big East is taking care of past wrongs.

I don't know - if a bowl is willing to correct a 3 year old wrong, then I think Cincinnati just earned a chit with the folks in Charlotte. Somewhere along the way they'll have the chance to cash in that chit...

The Big East is not taking care of anything. Will Webb and his staff, the people who actually run the Meineke Car Care Bowl, decide who gets invited to play in the game.

True and unfortunate given that the ACC was able to pressure the bowl to take BC even before they officially joined the conference based on the article.

Will Webb has a bad habit of taking advice from John Swofford on just about everything concerning the Meineke Car Care Bowl. What the ACC wants, the ACC gets, that is pretty much how things work at their office in Charlotte.

Well, the bowl is operated by Raycom Sports, who happens to have the ACC's football syndication package and the full rights to ACC basketball (Raycom then sells games to ESPN, ABC, CBS, FSN and then syndicates just about everything else).

Incidentally, Raycom just bought the SEC's syndication package from Lincoln Financial. No more LF Sports.
