OT: Jayhawks' Kaun suffers torn knee tendon
Quote:Sasha Kaun, the 6-11 center being counted on to play a key role for Kansas this season, will be out several weeks with a knee injury.
Coach Bill Self said Kaun sustained a partially torn patella tendon in his right knee during practice Sunday. He will not need surgery but he's likely to miss the showdown with defending NCAA champion Florida on Nov. 25 in Las Vegas and not be back until the first week of December.
Already missing from the front line was 6-11 C.J. Giles, who has been suspended indefinitely for unspecified reasons. This leaves the Jayhawks with only three big men on scholarship.
Until Kaun gets back, Kansas may have to rely on heralded 6-9 freshman Darrell Arthur.
"We're a tiny team all of a sudden," Self said. "You lose 6-11, 6-11 and you get small very quickly. At least for the short term, we've gone from being a deep, long athletic team to one that doesn't have much inside depth at all and not much size."
Kaun's injury could have been worse, Self said.
"We're fortunate because Sunday we thought it was worse. It's not completely torn. It's not a serious deal."
Self said he may make a decision this week on whether to reinstate Giles, who was suspended for several reasons, including poor academic work.
"I'm not focusing on C.J. Giles," Self said. "My focus is on trying to get our team better, and he's not part of our team. He may never be part of our team."

My gut feeling is that with that injury he will be out a lot longer than the KU folks are saying or thinking. A torn patella tendon takes closer to three months to heel, and then will be very sore and stiff for another six months. I feel bad for the kid. Is he just a sophmore this year? If so he may end up red shirting...
