coppin state game & more
if you went to the game today, please post & let me know your thoughts.

from the box score & recap posted on yahoo sports, i see that we won handily :)
(why is the final score & recap not posted on the ksu site??? weird... & 2nd rate.)

again, mike mckee & mike scott came thru in a major way. i noticed that singletary did not play (his 2-game suspension was supposed to be over.) i take it that he is still in JC's doghouse... not good.

noticed that parks played briefly.. made a basket & got a board. kool :)

now... a few other things...

what is up with k-zone?????? for a 1st rate program, we certainly have a 2nd rate audio/video situation. does anyomne over at the athletic dept care??? why do they treat us fans so shabily??

i've been noticing that sullinger has not been getting minutes. i wonder why?? is my fave next to mike scott. he is mr. floorburn & hustle. what gives??

also.. i noticed that mr. woods had an off game today.. sooo that's 2 of 3 games he's been like that. hmmmmm.

OK... i look forward to everyone's replies & comments.

Muncha-

Will leave it to others for a recap. Just a few notes.

You are right about K Zone. It stinks that the video wasn't avaiable for the second home game in a row.

The recap is now avaiable on the KSU website.
http://www.kentstatesports.com/

Singletary got hurt in practice. Doesn't sound too serious, but couldn't play today.

Singeltary was out with a hip flexor. DiMaria will likely be red-shirted.

The defense was good today. McKee is getting open and the team is finding him for open shots. He has the shooting stroke of Jeff Anderson and the scoring ability of Nate Reinking. Scott played with a ton of energy today.

Q started well and then disappeared. Sherman was big all day. He hit some big threes and had 5 assists. Fisher played better in the second half but was a turnover machine in the first half.

They were simply the better team today.

Anyone know why Coppin State's Tywain McKee didn't play? He's their top scorer, not listed in the box score.

RE: coppin state game & more
Speaking of TO's...I'm concerned about Fisher.

In our three games thus far, we had a total of 5 against Detroit, 23 against Hampton, and 11 today. In those games, Fisher has 1 (in 23 mins), 7 (in 20 mins), and 5 (in 22 mins), respectively. Mincy has 0 (in 35 minutes), 4 (in 29 mins), and 1 (in 22 mins), respectively.

I hope this is due to him getting used to the system, rather than an indication of things to come.

Flashs - Jeff Anderson?? I do remember him but i try to forget the Dave Grube era. How about the stroke of Nate Meers or Armon Gates?

Sully is not doing anything wrong at all. Looks good as ever but i have been very impressed with Q and Scott so far. Heck Knight should be even getting more minutes. We are fine at the 4 and 5 position with those 4 guys. So please no Why is Parks playing threads?

Sing didn't play as he now has a pulled groin.

Fisher and Woods have talent just need meshed into the KSU style of ball.

We looked better than thurs but Coppin State was pretty bad and we physically dominated. I expect much of the same tomorrow against Longwood.

The real tests will be next 4 games after tues (X, IU or ILL St, St Louis, UNC Greensboro (who won at Ga Tech)

RE: coppin state game & more
I was at the Coppin State game as well.

I think McKee may well be the best 3 pt shooter we've had in many a year. His stroke is darn near perfect and at 6'5", he can get it off better than any of the shorter former 3 point aces mentioned in this thread. I think with Mike, it's all about not rushing his shot. He's pretty quick and really hustles at both ends. Seems to have good a good overall floor game (right position a right time, passes well and throws it to the right guy, where he should be on D, will fight for rebounds, etc...). McKee reminds me a lot of Mike Gansey, the WV star of 2 years ago. Moves like him and shoots like him.

So far to me, team looks pretty good but not "beastly" on the boards as I had hoped. 6 months ago I was thinking that at least one of our 2 big guys (Garcia or Parks) could give us the inside presence we'll need in certain games. At this point, they don't look like they fit into JC plans for this year.

The guys back from last year have all played about what you'd expect. I see nothing significant to report. All are solid and hard working. Scott knows he has to lead this team and is doing that. Mincy knows he has to control the tempo and shut down the other teams top scoring guard. He's doing that. Q, well, Q is Q...He's bigger and stronger than last year. One heck of a defender (when he's focussed). Just not a dominant player IMO. Foul trouble has limited his minutes too.

Fisher has been sloppy with the ball at times but I think he'll come around. JC just about chewed right through him in the 1st half against Coppin with his 5 TO's. He settled down in the 2nd half and had no TO's and had 3 hoops (2 were fine drives to the bucket). At the least, he seems like a very good back up to Mincy. Better than any back up pt guard I can remember around here (or in the MAC in general).

Woods is a mystery so far. He shot poorly again on Sunday but my concern with him is his seemingly lack of an all around game (defense, rebounding, court presence). IMO he does not appear to be a great athlete though he looks like one just watching him stand still. He walks and runs in a "herky jerky" deliberate style. Shoots that way too. From JC's pre-season comments about him, I thought this kid was a finished product ready to step in and dominate. So far, I don't see it. Streaky shooter and a good FT shooter and that's it...

JC played his top 8 players a lot more minutes in Sunday's game than you might expect (in the 2nd half with score the way it was).. It looked like he was trying to give them all the minutes possible so that they could work out the kinks before next weekends big games vs. Xavier and potentially Indiana. He knows we're gonna have to win the Xavier game and probably win the G Mason and STL games to get strong consideration for an at large NCAA bid, if need be.

That's what I see so far. I'm going to Chicago next weekend so I can give you some 1st hand observations then as well.

Go Flashes!

Perfect comparison i couldnt agree more.

Couldn't agree more. Has Antonio gates type body. wish he would bang more and hit that mid-range jumper. Right now he just hangs out in the corner looking for 3's.

Hello new to this site although I followed it for awhile, but new to chiming in. I agree with most assesments of the game thus far. Good game (for one early in the season). Good games by Mckee and Scott. Q started fast for the 2nd straight game but dissapeared, although it seems that it may be by design. Seems he comes out of the game fairly quickly when he starts off well. Also I don't believe he has forgot how to play defense, he may have been told to approach the game different

RE: coppin state game & more
my dad's take on the coppin state game (hampton game too.)

Yes, I attended the Hampton and the Coppin State games.....

As we expected, the Flashes looked good; particularly the depth and rotation of players......Particularly on defense; really wore the other teams down.

Highlights: Good overall team efforts in both games. Hampton a pretty good team with balance and quick guards however defensive press got to them; one area of concern is that we were outrebounded by Hampton, a smaller team. Also, let them back in the games toward end after leading by fifteen. I'm sure that JC preached to them about "finishing" a game.

Coppin State not much competition.......smaller team with a couple of good shooters. Leading scorer was sitting out due "tram rule violation". Had a very entertaining older black coach; very animated; reminded me of Charlie Coles....

Observations: McKee is shooting with lots of confidence. Knows he is the 3 pt MAN now and that team is relying on him to hit over zones. Knight, Q and Scott rebounded and played great "D" on Sunday.....Scott 17 pts and 10 rebs.... Mincy is doing the job at point with 1 to in 2 games.......Al Fisher good offense, but little "D".....JC will be on his ass all season!

Hope all is well......

have a good time in SC this week....

Love......Dad

RE: coppin state game & more
Hampton was much bigger than Kent in the frontcourt.

JC thinks they were as big as anyone in the country and one of the biggest/athletic frontcourts we will see all year.
