Don't be sad for me, I'm a very happy man. But, as you should know by now, being a Tiger football fan you learn to be realistic. The fact is that Memphis might be desireable to corporations for distribution but it is not the first place someone wants to live. And believe me when I say that I am a "glass half full" type of person. Other than the things you mentioned, what is so great about this city? The rampant racism, the city council or the city leadership? I am speaking the truth but in hindsight I shouldn't have replied to this thread. For that I do apologize.

Oh, and being honest about the condition of your home city has absolutely nothing to do with overall happiness.

We have lived in and out of Memphis for the past 16 years and quite frankly, have no desire to move back at this point. Each time we have lived back in Memphis, even though all of our family is there, my Wife, family and I have had no problem leaving again. Not a knock on Memphis per se, we enjoy friends and family when we visit, but it just holds no real allure, even after having been raised there. I love the Tigers, which brings us back for games, but I have no real reason to ever want to live there again. That said, if the opportunity were the right one and we were offered the opportunity we would come back. There are some wonderful neighborhoods in Memphis that I would relish calling home again but not so much that I would seek to return on my own.

I also have many fond memories of things in Memphis that I miss. If kids were not an issue, I would love to live downtown, which was not an option when I was young and living in town. BBQ is somewhere near the top of the list, although, Whole Hog here in LR makes it a bit easier to forget.

I've been living in Boston for more than three years now, amidst the rampant individualism, godlessness, blind ambition, general unfriendliness, and anxiety that people like to call life in a "progressive" city. So, of course, there are a lot of things I miss about Memphis -- basically the opposite qualities of all the things I just described. I do know a lot of good people here in New England, but as a place (you know that general vibe you get about where you're living) it is much colder, literally and emotionally. And, besides, I still think of Memphis as home. That's reason enough to miss it.

Oh, and I almost forgot one thing I really miss:

Memphis has the most beautiful girls in the world. Seriously, y'all take it for granted, but once you leave the South, you realize how true it is.

Since Im not orginally from Memphis but was born in West Tennessee, how about getting a little broader and saying that the state of Tennessee is the best state in the nation? ITs definitely the most diverse. Someone tell me another state in the US that offers more and Ill call you a liar.

I can legally bet on sporting events in Nevada. Until Tennesse can offer that then they cannot possibly be #1 on my list.

I totally agree!!

I feel like I am one of the few Memphians who actually LOVES it here. It used to make me sad but I have realized those that continue to live, work and play here but constantly ***** about the city and area would be bitching if they lived on their own island. I wish more people would realize there is a great wonderful city out there, with wonderful people doing amazing things every day. Too bad people only watch the local news and believe the only things going on in this city are what is reported, forgetting the fact that all news broadcasts are based on "shock value".

Now back to the list:

-The Arcade
-Blue Plate
-Great live music
-Females never have to open the door for themselves!

Don't even get me started here. I've lived all over the country, but have always considered Memphis my home. You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.

Really? I was born and raised there and moved out in 2004, and I have never experienced this. Living in Colorado now and now I know what it's like to have 4 seasons. I always thought that Spring, and I use it lightly, in Memphis lasted about a week and was still in the 80's, and Fall isn't much better.

Why is disagreeing politely being an a$$hole?

Its called hijacking a thread with negative vibes.
I enjoy Memphis mild winters rather than being fighting snow for months. Memphis had a great spring this year and we are enjoying a nice fall.

Why not leave it at that rather than trying to find something wrong with whate others say is good?

I apologize for ruining your lovefest thread with my negative vibes about my 33 years of Memphis weather experience.

my sentiments exactly. Unfortunately, Memphis does not have a lot of companies in my line of work. Although I still have family there, each time I visit I miss it less and less. It is not the same Memphis I grew up in.

Whole Hog BBQ reminds me alot of Memphis bbq - it's good

I can't believe the zoo hasn't gotten more love. It's simply one of the best in the country.
BBQ
Gus's Fried Chicken
The fact that my neighborhood sits in the center of Memphis and feels like a small town when I walk out my front door (gotta love the quiet and all of the trees)

Doesn't change the fact that I'll be moving to Panama City in a few years. However, that's more a love of the beach and a need for adventure with my wife than anything else. We might be down there few years and make our way back.

I know this guy. It was a joke. Lighten up.

Feeling a bit defensive are we? It was a simple question, and quite frankly, if you are trying to post an inside joke to someone you know, you are fair game if no one else knows that.

Amen to the zoo part. I absolutely love living in Huntsville but hate that the city does not have a zoo. I have been to the Nashville zoo since moving here and they have a really good zoo. It's about on par w/ Memphis zoo as it stands now but the pending improvements widen the gap imho.
