Philip Perry named WAC "Defensive Player of the Week"

Philip Perry had 10 tackles and
returned a pass interception
for a touchdown in the SMU win.

DENVER - Rice quarterback Kyle Herm, San Jose State defensive end Philip Perry and Boise State cornerback Chris Carr were named the Western Athletic Conference offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively.

Herm, a junior from Stanton, Texas (Stanton HS), led Rice to its first win of the season with 239 yards of total offense. Herm rushed for 102 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries and completed 4-of-8 passes for 137 yards and another touchdown against Louisiana Tech. Three of Herm's four completions went for 57 yards (a touchdown to Clint Hatfield), 38 yards and 36 yards.

Perry, a junior from Lakewood, Calif. (Cerritos College), made 10 tackles (seven solo), including two for a loss of six yards in San Jose State's 34-23 win at SMU. Perry also intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown. The interception was the nation-high 15th for the Spartans to go along with a total of 24 takeaways, also the most in the country. The win also gave San Jose State its fourth of the season and third in a row.

Carr, a sophomore from Reno, Nevada (McQueen HS), blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown in Boise State's 58-31 win over Hawai'i. Hawai'i punted from its own 22-yard line and Carr broke through the right side of the Warriors
