SF Husky Wrote:Next year's UCONN team should be better than this year's version. We only graduate 4 seniors out of the starting 22 and one of them is Larry Taylor. Next year should be UCONN's big year so that game at Papa John should be interesting.
Only interesting because we have an idiot on the sidelines. Here is the Hartford Courant on giving Taylor a Gameball.
Football: Sunday Leftovers – Game Balls For Larry Taylor, Andre Dixon And Scott Lutrus (And Much More)
Some bits left over from Sunday’s conference call with UConn coach Randy Edsall.
Edsall gave game balls to Larry Taylor (special teams), Andre Dixon (offense) and Scott Lutrus (defense) after Friday's 21-17 victory over Louisville at Rentschler Field.
Taylor returned a punt 74-yards for a touchdown, Dixon has 115 yards on 22 carries - including the game-winning 5-yard touchdown run with under 2 minutes remaining - and Lutrus had a career high 18 tackles and an interception.
During the call Edsall was asked if there was any worry about Taylor taking unexpected hits in the coming games after seemingly calling for a fair catch prior to his punt return touchdown early in the second half, which tied the score at 7.
“All I know is that Larry will go out there and give his best effort and play until the whistle blows,” Edsall said. “All we can do, all Larry can do, is control what he does. He can’t control what anybody else does.”
Edsall wouldn’t say much about the injury that kept fullback Anthony Davis out of the game but did sound as if he was impressed with the first game from replacement Anthony Sherman.
“I thought he played well for his first ballgame,” Edsall said. “We really like Anthony. We really like him. I know he’s only a true freshman but I think he’s made a lot of strides and I think if he continues to really work hard he’s got a chance to be a very good football player. I’m sure we will see more of him as we continue to go. I like him, I like what he does.”
Edsall wasn’t impressed with the performance of UConn punter and Louisville native Desi Cullen against the Cardinals.
“I didn’t think that Desi had one of his better games the other night,” Edsall said. “I thought Desi tried to press too much. I thought we got him out of that in the two previous games. Then playing against Louisville, being from his hometown, I thought he was pressing a little bit too much. I just thought that he was trying a little bit too hard. We’ve got to get him back in the groove that we had him in the previous two [games before Louisville]. He got out of that a little bit Friday night. I think sometimes it’s just human nature when people go against somebody or against a team from their hometown or a former team that they might have played against, sometimes they might try a little bit too hard. I think that’s what Desi was doing. I thought his kickoffs were good but in terms of his punting game, for Desi’s standards, it wasn’t as consistent as we would have liked it to be or as Desi would like it to be. He would be the first to tell you that.”
Edsall said the story of the night was the UConn defense stepping up and the offense coming back.
“I think in the game of football there are going to be 5-10 plays within the game that are going to make a difference in the ball game,” Edsall said. “Some plays might get more magnified due to when they happen, but the one thing is I think our team deserves a lot of credit. We were down 10 points with 12 minutes to go and we came back and scored two touchdowns and held them to nothing in a very small period of time. I think they had 74 plays on offense, we had 57. Every play counts the same. All I know is that we were down 10 points with 12 minutes to go and I think it says a lot about the character and the heart of this team to respond, to come back, to put 14 points on the board and then we go ahead and they have whatever it was left with 1 timeout, with an All-American quarterback to go 80 yards to try to beat us and our defense stepped up to the challenge. I think that’s the story. I think that’s the real story of the whole game, how this team battled from being 10 points down with 12 minutes to go and came back won the football game. In my opinion that’s the story.”
