Wanny or Kragthorpe?
Gun to your head...who would you rather have as head coach of your team? It's a tough choice, but I think I'd have to go with Krag.

I'd have to go with Wanny. I don't even think HE could totally disassemble a National Title Contender in 1/2 a season.

The BIG EAST has some of the best young coaches in the country with Rich Rodriguez, Greg Schiano, Brian Kelly & Jim Leavitt but also have three duds in Dave Wannstedt, Greg Robinson and Steve KRAPthorpe. Jury still out on Randy Edsell.

I think Edsell's done a very solid job at UCONN. Whether he can take them to the "next level" yet remains to be seen, but they've played pretty well this year so far. I think they are going to beat some people in the BE this year and get to a bowl game.

RE: Wanny or Kragthorpe?
too early to tell. wanny has had three seasons of underachievement documented. kragthorpe we still don't know about. no really. we don't know yet. it's too early to tell. at this point i would say kragthorpe because we know what we get with wannstedt from his stint at pitt and what (little) he has done in the pros.

plus i'm not convinced that kragthorpe is all that responsible for the destruction of the defense. as i recall, it wasn't all that great during petrino's years other than last year as a unit overall. and who has been there for those years?

Tough choice. Is it just a pop gun to my head or a real one? I'd have to go with Krag only due to him coaching here for 6 games vs. 2.5 seasons. Don't consider that a vote of confidence though.

I'd pull the trigger and avoid the decision altogether if those are my options. 03-banghead

question- how many programs were already highly rated, got a new coach the next year, and did not miss a beat the next season?

i can only think of two- miami (arguably they were already there and needed coker to get them over the top) and boise state. that should tell you something: there are definite transition periods between coaches. and even then, successful coaches sometimes take time to get another program up to speed- look at the coach who left boise who went to colorado. he didn't forget how to coach overnight.

and save that crap on wannstedt trying to build a program. that coach you had before john l. smith and after shnellenberger- he was bought out/fired right? program was at the bottom of the barrel right? didn't john l. turn that thing around in a year going from 1-10 to 7-4? and didn't he have a winning season every year he was at louisville? charlie weis has had three years at notre dame and how's his rebuilding effort from the "horrific" tenure of tyrone willingham? some coaches get adjusted faster than others. some do not adjust. but you cannot make a decision on whether or not kragthorpe has made that adjustment after one season.

but you can when talking about pitt. you said it yourself- wannstedt is trying to rebuild a program. it's been about three years. seen any progress? i haven't. pitt wins early in the season and then fades. pitt should be in position to be in a bowl game THIS year and i really don't see it happening. how long can you be rebuilding before finally declaring that the coach is no good? three years is enough time, two months is certainly not.

i think kragthorpe has a better history to go from (tulsa from nowhere to a winning program in 4 years) than wannstedt (fired from two pro jobs and failing at this college job) and i would certainly give krag at least 2 years before deciding anything, especially since brohm, douglas, and most likely urutia are gone next season. you cardinal fans really need to get a grip on reality, you're sounding like kentucky basketball fans during the tubby smith years.

and while i haven't said who i am a fan of intentionally, how do you know that i'm NOT a louisville fan or NOT a pitt fan?

I'd take Koach. He is going to prove to be a winner.

RE: Wanny or Kragthorpe?
I'd take Kragthorpe. At least he's "shown" the ability to produce a winner at Tulane. The stuff happening at Louisville is probably related to "old players adjusting to new coaching staff".

Any coach who goes for it on 4th and 2 in ANY overtime (good or bad outcome) when all that's needed is a FG, needs to have his head examined. And I say that fully aware that our former coach Steve Logan would have probably done a similar thing in that 10-9 West Virginia game back in the mid-90s.

I agree, Mike. Things are extremely disappointing right now but I remain hopeful.
