Actually, if I remember correctly, Mick has two years left on the contract (thanks Rance). We couldn't buy out two years of a contract last season.

I picked 6 wins because I think that Col. Spetman might see that as enough improvement to let him finish out his contract. I'm just guessing though.

Mick got the extension to prove to people on the outside that we were serious about the program, not because Mick earned it. I understand why Rance did what he had to do.

I think Mick's been dealt a bad hand. For all his faults, no one, I repeat, NO ONE would have done much better with the recruiting and facilities handicapps he's been operating under. He's never really had an honest chance to prove himself. Unfortunately, I don't see much improvement this year, though. 4-7 is likely. But at the same time, I think Mick will keep his job unless something really blows up. Sex scandal, 1-10 season, DUI. Could lightning strike twice in Logan? Dunno.

Mick will be here for the 2005 season. Chances are good he'll even get a contract extension after this season for the same reasons he did a few years ago. A last-year coach has a hard time convincing potential recruits that his program supports him. He'll be offered a year or two. If he doesn't show strides in 2005, we buy out the last year or two. Mortgaging our WAC income for a couple of years isn't going to hurt us. We're already used to getting by without it.

Guess I was wrong. I was thinking a 3-8 season would save Mick's job, but even if we win this Saturday that obviously isn't going to happen.

Well, I wish Mick the best. You can't blame him for trying. Like I said earlier, I don't think there are more than a handfull of coaches who would have done any better given the same circumstances. And most of them would have left after the first couple of successful years anyway.

But here's to a fresh start in the WAC. A new conference, a new coach, and some new facilities.

Buy Aggie Bonds.
