Who will be the best quarterback this season in the W.A.C. Go on record NOW and make your pick. We'll revisit this at the end of the season and see who was "All-seeing" and wise, and who was not.

I'm not a big Timmy Chang fan but I think this award is his to lose.
I think Jeff Rowe might get the starting nod at QB for Nevada instead of Heiser. Of course, I wouldn't vote for either guy as all-league material.
I don't know enough about the new starters to make any bold predictions although Boise and LaTech seem to be able to plug anybody into that QB position and they'll be successful. Pinegar is solid when healthy.

I agree with the Chang pick....Tommy will probably throw for 5,000 yards and Hawaii will probably win 6 or 7 games. Tommy could also lead the nation in interceptions and still win the award.

Since passing stats usually carry the day in the final voting, it will probably by Chang. If rushing offense carried any weight, Greg Henderson would have a shot. But rushing alone won't get him there and I don't expect him to even start every Rice game, so Henderson doesn't get a real chance in this sweepstakes. Nice thing about Henderson is that he really doesn't care as long the team wins!

i know chang's the sexy pick here, but if he starts throwing INT's in the first couple of games, june jones has shown no apprehension in pulling him.

chang's ball control in the first 2-3 games will be critical to him finishing the season. he's had 3 years to improve his accuracy, and if last season is any indication, he'll need to improve dramatically to cut down the picks. i just don't see that happening.

also, sanford and zabransky in boise are so close that whoever starts the first game will need to play outstanding football to keep his job. there could be a season-long QB controversy brewing here.

fresno? nope; they look like they're gearing up a smashmouth season running the ball. pinegar will be asked to play conservatively, let the big brusing backs do their thing and don't throw away games.

i'm inclined to go with an up and coming program with a senior QB at the helm. tulsa won't sneak up on anyone this year, and killian had a nightmare bowl game last year to get over.

i think rice will surprise people and win a lot of games, in part because of solid upperclassmen leadership at the QB position.

so i'm inclined to make a wild guess and go with henderson to shock the WAC and win top QB honors.

I was incredibly unimpressed with Chang last season, and I completely think he is over-hyped. He is easily rattled during games and seems to lose confidence just as easily. If he starts strong, he could roll, but as soon as he hits anything resembling a road block, he will struggle. He plays well on the islands, but really struggles off.

I went with the homer-pick of Killian. He had a strong showing during the past WAC season and now that he is completely healed from his collarbone injury, he should return to form. He knows how to make plays and will do anything (legal) to help the team win. The running back position should be deeper, which will help hte offense overall and make him look better and with Mills and Blankenship willing to take the pass through the middle (with all the nasty hits that they have taken...wow), his humbers should be good. The line will be improved as well, so that will also help the offense run more smoothly.

I look for Coach K to redshirt our backup QB in lieu of a younger and even more inexperienced QB, assuming one shows at least flashes of brilliance. I know that Smith wanted to redshirt last season to beef up a bit, but opportunity and chance did not allow it. Hopefully someone will step up this year and allow him a year to sit out and develop physically. BTW-- he is the record holder for passing yards in the state of Oklahoma. He broke Killian's record and is a much better passer. He just needs more beef to take the physical beating of a college season. Sorry-- I got off topic.

I don't think there's any doubt that Chang's the clear favorite. If he breaks Detmer's record and has any semblance of a decent season, the award will be his.

I definitely agree with all his criticisms, however. There's a reason he's known as Capt. Turnover.

Chang takes the award, but Killian is the WAC's best QB IMO.

I agree with most of the sentiments here, but I think one of the newcomers will "SHOCK" the rest of the W.A.C. Chang and Kilian are the "easy" picks here, but I look for one of the new starters to have a stellar season this fall. Won't say who tho. :-)

Question for the Hawaii fans tho. If Chang is "all that" then why did June Jones start his 2nd string QB against Boise State and leave Chang sitting on the bench until the 4th quarter? I never did understand that. I can't recall the name of the Hawaii QB who started and played most of the game against Boise State last season (Whieldon?? SIC??). He was a 5th year Senior last fall I think. He did okay I guess, but he certainly didn't shine in comparison to Chang, so I never quite understand why he got the call last season against Boise State while Chang sat on the bench for most of the game.

My best guess is that Jones knows how streaky Chang is. Chang can light up the scoreboard but he could probably set an NCAA record for interceptions just as easily.

Chang doesn't seem to understand that you can't swing for the fences every single play and you've got to take what the defense gives ya sometimes.

With the record in sight, and the schedule being extremely soft, i doubt Chang will see the bench much this season.
