make sure they are licensed, bonded and insured. for residential projects, i have heard ARK does good work.

also, do NOT hire any roofing contractor who wants ANY money up front. if they can't float themselves shingles for a few days, you don't want them on your roof.

Chris Fielder Roofing is pretty good. and do not use anyone with the last name Jolly. There are numerous brothers, companies, etc.

Chris Barwick roofing did mine 4-5 years ago, no problems.

A.L. Edwards is the best in town (the one the other companies call to fix the problems they can't fix or they cause) but you will also pay for it.

And as above, make sure of the licensed/bonded thing--check the state website and BBB--but also make sure they give you a copy of their insurance certificate before they get on your house. And then call the insurance company and make sure their policy is current.

70% of the costs of roofing companies is in workers' comp and liability premiums. The companies that are offering you a deal that is much better than someone else are probably doing it because they have no or inadequate insurance coverage. If they don't have coverage and someone falls of your roof, you absorb the liability (you still may even if they do have full coverage, but at least you are better protected)

Chris did the roof on my last house. He's the only roofer I had on my list until I posted. I plan on getting a couple of other quotes in addition to Chris's. If they're all in the same ballpark I'll definitely go with Chris. He's a really nice guy and did great on my last house.
