PG
what other pgs is Huggs looking at for 07. With Mayo not being a done deal and the fact that he is a 1 year player anyway, PG has to be a priority.

i agree,
he may hit the Juco route again. I hope he doesnt end up with a bunch of pf and wing players and no one there to dish them the ball....we have seen that before. but with guys he's got, recruiting a good pg will not be hard.

Well, I know I remember hearing he was recruiting DeAndre Brown. I hope he can get in on him, because it would be nice to get a solid 4 year top 100 PG.

We are getting OJ Mayo. Combination of gut feeling and some overheard talk.

The other PG we are going after (and would sign along with OJ) is Tyrel Reed out of Burlington, KS. He's a big KU and Roy Williams homer. He will go to UNC if they offer. If they don't (due to number of scholarships) then he will make his decision between KU and K-State. KU also has to decide if they want to give him a scholarship. Huggins has already given Tyrel a scholarship offer and met in home several times. If he feels KU hasn't given him enough love I expect him to be in Manhattan, despite his childhood ties.

Note: Tyrel's dad has closed off all interviews since Huggins started recruiting him. One reason, to keep the media from hounding them as any player that Huggins and KU showdown for is a big deal, and the second, to keep the KU donors off their backs in case Tyrel starts to lean toward K-State.

Second Note: Tyrel's dad helped Roy coach basketball camps. Hence, the loyalty. However, this wouldn't be the second time we stole a childhood Jayhawk. Mark Frederick was a walk-on for KSU the last four seasons. His dad is the former KU AD and Mark was a KU ball boy for most of his childhood, including the 1993 Final Four team.

Javi Gonzalez is most likely ours for the taking. He shared the court with Mayo in a couple tournament games and they did really well together. Miami, Florida, and FSU also want him. He would be a good pickup too.

PG is the toughest position to fill! Good ones are few and far between. I have NEVER seen a JUCO PG come out and play competently from the outset at Div I level in their first year. I have only seen a couple high school PGs come out and do that either! Their names are like Iverson and Kidd! But I don't seem to see any of those kind around at the moment.

So let's sign as many skilled point guards as we possibly can! They will come in handy...

Tyrel is one of my good friends cousin. He always talked him up a bunch and I had heard of him but I didn't realize until now that he was ranked 58th in the nation! I will try and see if i can get any info from my friend.

Tmac, are you still gonna try to be a team manager. That would be pretty cool, and plus you would be able to provide some key information for us, especially for the out of towners. Yea, the whole grcoat thing was starting to get on my nerves too.

I'd really like to. They told me to send in a resume but I really don't know if I have much of a chance of getting it. I really have no experience in any of that. I played high school basketball my freshman and sophmore year in high school until I tried to fight my coach and quit! lol I was good but other than that I don't know how I would get the position. I still think I might try to make a nice resume here in the next couple days and send it in. If anybody has any suggestions than let me know. I asked the athletic department about the situation and they weren't really that helpful.

No, I'm gonna be a junior next year which is another reason I don't think the manager thing wouldn't be a very good possibility. I'm really not even looking for the management position, just basically anything I can get. I just graduated from junior college or will be at the end of the month. I'm glad I waited to go to a D1 school, because I'm sure i wouldn't have chosen ksu if it wouldn't have been for Huggs coming. Plus my best friend decided to transfer at the same time so I had a good roommate. Everything has fallen into place perfect. Some sort of job on the team would be like icing on the cake. Who knows, I am just happy to watch huggins coach and see some of the best basketball talent in the nation come in.

Jarr,
as youi probably know and fear, the Point Guard position is not something that Coach Huggins has excelled at recruiting or even evaluating in the past 16 years. He doesn't let his assistant coaches have much input and he has chosen poorly at times with point guards like Horton, Williams, LeGree, etc, etc. A long list. You also know that his point guards are normally very strong, physical players that don't necessarily have great ball skills but are tough. Those decisions led to many early tournament losses. Hopefully, Coach Huggins will depend more on assistant coaches to help evaluate the talent and he will also stop his past practices of holding 4 hour practices the day before NCAA tournament Games. We ALL know how that took the game legs out of his teams in the past. It should be a fun year for everyone this year. You will see a great upsurge in hard playing and desire to win. Coach Huggins always brought that to Cincinnati. We will never forget all he did in bringing Cincinnati back to basketball success but let's hope his personal life gets straightened out. Maybe Manhattan, Kansas can do that for him. If the boosters try to win his friendship over by drinking , then it will crash and burn. That will be a tragedy then. Stand behind Huggs and bring his teams over the top. He deserves it again. We miss him in Cincy. I hope he always treasures his time spent there. He took nothing and made it into something.......God bless.

Please read the quote. Van Exel did not start, or get significant playing time, until about half way through his first year at UC (1991-1992). Yes, he was a wonderful PG but it took even him some time to ramp it up and learn the position...

Huggins will be fine in the recruiting world. The only thing he struggled with was getting a tall guy. He had two very good players in Hicks and Maxiell that played bigger than the 6'7" frame that they had. If he struggles it is finding a true big man. But I think picking up Jason Bennett has soleved that problem for awhile.
