The answer to all your questions.

Quote:"The event belongs to Birmingham," said Richard Giannini, the chairman of the NCAA Postseason Football Subcommittee. "Birmingham has certification for the game. Papa John's is just the title sponsor. Louisville would have to apply for a new bowl.

"And to be honest, it will be hard for Louisville because I don't see any room for a new bowl game right now."

There were 32 bowl games on the 2006 schedule, including the inaugural Papajohns.com Bowl, and the International Bowl in Toronto.

While Papa John's is the corporate sponsor, ESPN Regional Television owns the rights and the game would continue even without the pizza maker's participation.

"We acquired the bowl license from the NCAA and we've signed a four-year deal with the city of Birmingham," said Mark Meadows, the bowl's executive director. "Last year's game was a success in Birmingham. The city of Birmingham has a tremendous opportunity to grow the game and cement its future."

Okay, after reading all of the posts before posting myself. . .this is what I'm getting:

1) The bowl doesn't belong to Papa John's
2) The PJ Int. does not have the main interest in title sponsorship
3) Espn regional owns the bowl
4) The bowl isn't leaving Birmingham

Did I get that right, or should I read through all of the posts again??

Sorry, I couldn't resist

BirminghamBound Wrote:So who are the Stadium Certificates for?

The Stadium Certificates are holdovers from the old City Commission government that used them to finance stadium construction rather than taxes. Each certificate is for two seats in the center sections on both sides of the field. 1,000 were sold in 1926 to build on the east side. A later sale of 1,000 provided money for the west side. When the press box was added, 571 were sold to help finance it and the seats were painted gold to mark them. While both Auburn and Bama were playing important home games here, their value jumped to thousands of dollars each, and they were sold by the original owners to wealthy corporate interests so about 1,600 people own them now.
Since they cover about 1/5 of the "best seats" (there are only about 26,000 TOTAL seats between the goal lines), no NFL owner in his right mind would bring a team to a stadium where he couldn't sell them as advance season tickets. Once Bama instituted the "Tide Pride" program of collecting premium "donations" of thousands of dollars for each of the "best seats" at home games, it made no economic sense to play ANY home games in B'ham so they pulled out as soon as possible. Like many of the "money saving" things the City Commission did, the "SCs" turned out to be bad for the city in the long run.
Now the only hope the "SC" holders have to recoup their investment is to block any other venue (can you say "Dome"?) from being built unless their old "rights" are "grandfathered in" with any new stadium, or to hope that someone will buy out their rights to end them.

Maybe they will be outbid for title sponsorship this year or something (unless it was a multiyear contract). "PapaJohns.com Bowl" is a gay name anyway. :domokun:
