RE: Question for UL fans.
I would prefer that we stay in the Big East. I heard a sound bite this past Monday from the scrimmage last Saturday where Tom Jurich voiced the same opinion. Jurich said that "UofL was flattered to be mentioned as a possible expansion candidate for the Big Ten but that the school was not interested. He said Louisville was in the Big East conference and would remain there. It is where we belong."
That is about as plain as it gets. I'm sure he feels the same way about the SEZ.
Again Jurich shows why he is the best AD in the country.

RE: Question for UL fans.
MHSCard forgot about Auburn. They aren't the big dog in Alabama. Not by a long shot. Why do you think there were no games played at Auburn until after The Bear died. All the games used to be played in Birmingham, which was basically a home game for Alabama.

Still, I think if the football schools in the BEast stick together, this will become one of the great conferences in the nation.

Quote:I knew the flaws of the UM/MSU point as soon as I laid it out, but having committed I felt obliged to hold. Swayed by knowing two MSU grads personally, I guess. My point focuses on the context, however, in terms of a State's entire system. While Michigan has an edge over MSU surely even you would agree the drop off from those two to the remaining universities is all the more steep. The Michigan MAC schools have research levels of maybe $20M, and no other public university in Michigan matches the Carnegie classifications of the two Big Ten schools. Thus my perspective of common tiering. Can we call one THE flagship? Sure, but the differences between the upper-tier institutions often seem negligible compared to the gap between those and the rest of the system. See where I'm headed?

Yes. And I agree with this in many instances. The gap between your 1A and 1B is much less significant than the gap between 1B and the rest of the public institutions in many states.

Quote:I'd be interested to see the comparisons for Auburn/Bama and Purdue/Indiana and will look those up when time permits. I know Indiana only recently passed Purdue in overall research funding and Bama is usually the lowest rated of BCS schools. UCLA also gets more dough than Cal, I believe. (Note to self: Must spend less time working and more time researching inane collegiate statistics!)

Without doing an awful lot of research on the topic, I suspect Purdue still receives more state funding research dollars than IU, mainly because of research reputation.

I suspect we would find that four or five of the California schools are close to together in terms of state research dollar grants and I wouldn't be surprised to see different ones leading the pack in different years.

As for Auburn/Alabama, do they even do research? <joking> <well, semi-joking>

Quote:Regardless, I've agreed/will agree there is a singular flagship in most states that has all the bells and whistles of something slightly better than all the rest, but, IMO, in context there is often another institution that operates on the same general plane. When compared to all the other schools within the Florida system, UF and FSU most closely resemble each other more than any other institutions.

Perhaps for now. But, as I indicated in my previous post, I think Florida is one of those states that wants to share the wealth more (and distribute it to where the population areas are denser) and it wouldn't surprise me in the least over the next decade or two to see USF cut into that gap. Not sure where UCF stands in all of this.

Good posting with you Gunner, as always.

Cheers,
Neil

That was funny and somewhat true at this point. I was waiting for someone to respond to that statement, but unfortunately, it had to be someone who is running out of names for himself on this board because he keeps getting banned, and the best name that you can come up with is "goldballs".03-lmfao

As I warned you in the past, stay clear of that dust that UofL has left in Southern Miss's path (and now in college baseball too 03-lmfao).....

......that dust will confuse you and make you bitter. 03-lmfao

While the SEC and Big 10 would be appealing, we would still be "the new kid with no tradition with the league" for a long time.

I personally like being in the Big East and being part of rebuilding the conference; we are wanted and needed in the Big East.

....however; for its long-term survival, I strongly believe that the Big East needs to be like the other 5 BCS conferences: a smaller, all-sports league.

RE: Question for UL fans.
It's a question of being the big fish in the small pond, or just another fish in the big pond. But the all-sports aspect is crucial to The BEast's long-term survival.

Why only 199%?

Surely it rates higher than that?
