Coach Rod's comments for the day
Happened to hear it on the radio a little bit ago and thought you would be interested

1) Basically said we would be foolish to expect the Big 10 not to expand in the future, and said he hoped it would not effect the BE

2) Reitereated the need for a 9th football member but wondered aloud how a school can be added given the current conference situation. This is an interesting contrast to WVU AD Eddie Pastilong who has gone on record seveal times recently saying how happy WVU was with the current situation.

3) For Syraucuse fans, a player from upstate NY who came to WVU by the way of JC named Stephen Maw is doing well and is running in the two deep right now

4) Commented on the fast developing rivalry with Louisville due to the great importance of the games played between the schools recently. Basically said it might be the most intense/hard fought game we play behind Pitt

RE: Coach Rod's comments for the day
People have been saying that about the Big Ten for years that's why I'm taking a wait and see approach. Hopefully they only go after someone like Texas or Missouri if they do expand. I still think it's posturing on the Big Ten's part to try and get some attention for the network. I'm so happy that Coach Rod is pressing the issue about a conference split. We need to split and we need to add at least one more team and develop this conference,

How happy will he be if the coach leaves?

He got a REAL good taste of it with that Alabama situation last year. He needs to get together with the other Big East football schools and work on building a legitimate All-Sports Conference.

WVU will vote or act accordingly to what is in the best interest of the football program. Remember this isn't Syracuse or Uconn we are talking about here. Also, Rich is the most powerful person in the athletic department. The events of the last yr in terms of he getting what he wanted should be proof of that

As for Pastilong, he has been the AD at WVU for many yrs now and is close to reteirment. One gets the impression that he just wants to sit back and enjoy the sports success WVU has achieved and will achieve in the near future. Frankly, I don't think a school has benefited more from being in the BE in football and basketball as West Virginia has. A lot of people are thinking that Eddie just doesn't want to rock the boat. If the football schools leave he will go along with it, but he won't be leading the charge.

Just my opinion

If there was a real good choice that would make signihcant change a 9th member would be added. However, while there are candidates their value for inclusion is far far less than the value of the existing conference.

Who knows what's going on in Eddie's mind. Sometimes I doubt that he does.

RE: Coach Rod's comments for the day
I agree bit, Rod is there to stay now for the most part. But I was hoping that that scare from Alabama along with the scare from the Big Ten would cause the Big East to be proactive instead of remaining reactive.

RE: Coach Rod's comments for the day
Obviously, the Thundering Herd considers it a rivalry. The home-page of the university's athletics web-site has a count-down clock to "The game." . . . "The" game isn't Miami, MU's opener, but the Mountaineers.

If Rod thinks the Herd is a burgeoning rival, does he foresee the Conference-USA team ever being part of the Big East?

"I don't know. I've speculated before—you know we're kind of unwieldy now. You've got 16 teams (in basketball), eight (opponents) for football. Then you've got Notre Dame out there for basketball. We've got a pretty big house. For (football) it makes sense to go to nine, then you've got four at home and four on the road. I don't know if that's going to happen. That's a whole 'nother dynamic. To add a ninth team to make it four-and-four makes a lot of sense to me," he said.

I love RichRod, but I truly believe Pastilong (or his successor should he retire) needs to have a replacement coach lined up, similar to Jurich.

Way too much postering by Rodriquez and I simply don't think West Virginia will be able to keep up with the salaries (both for him and his assistants) and the commitments (in terms of facilities) he seems to demand everytime he's offered a job.

Sooner or later I'm afraid they'll have to say, "It's been great, Rich. Good luck in your new job."

Hopefully though, it will be after he finally brings that long elusive NC to the Eers. If Syracuse can't win it, I'm always rooting for the Eers to finally do it.

Cheers,
Neil

-- Basically the cold truth WVU couldn't keep up with the pay increase the last time. Frome what I understand, friends of the program bankrolled the payraise and the new additions that will be coming to Mountaieer Field. Gov Manchin spent a lot of time organizing the high money donors in state and several out of state alums really stepped up as well.

Honestly, I don't know how loyal Rich is to the program. However, with all things being equal he did choos to coach at WVU over Bama. How many coaches around the country would have done so? If you would ask Rich, he would say the new fascilitys are needed because the state produces so few in state prospects. Thus, if you are going to get the best kids from other states you need to have great fascilitys. Its a much different attitude then Don Nehlen had which was basically find sleepers, get them in the weight room and coach the hell out of them

As for the future, there is one candidate that shines over the rest to replace Pastilong. The trick will be making it in his financial interest to accept the post.

If Rich would decide to leave, there are a handfull of candidates who will get a look. One of them will be former WVU player/Auburn HC Terry Bowden who was not so shy in saying he wanted the job last yr when it looked like Rich was leaving

They are the only ones who consider it so. 03-banghead

West Virginia doesn't consider Marshall a rival, and most Mountaineer fans consider this series something forced upon them by WV Gov. Joe Manchin.

Call the Gov. King Joe, for short. :ncaabbs:

FYI...every AD in the country has a "file" on every sport at their school...with a Coaching "wish list" of usually 3-5 candidates in each.

AD's can't predict sometimes their own coaches future wishes...let alone all the other teams in the Nation.

There's a difference between a "wish list" and having a plan in place for a replacement coach in case things go sour. That was his point, who is at the top of that list? Does he have someone at the top of that list?
