Why not smack the Herd instead of MAC?
Herd fans love to 'Smack the MAC', Detroit, etc. 01-wingedeagle

We smack Temple or whomever is the target of the times. Why?

Yet The Sporting News this week says Detroit is the #1 sports city in America. Herd fans have visions of Detroit '67 or even 20 years ago. Not the city with Ford Field and the Super Bowl, cool downtown and very impressive development occuring year after year probably dating back to the building of Comerica Park. Maybe a new hockey arena coming?

Akron's new stadium will make "The Joan" like... Okay, don't rag on anything named after an elderly female benefactor. It is beneath the dignity of MAC fans.

Does Marshall have an indoor practice facility? Most of the MAC does.

Any chance to get Marshall to visit the new Akron stadium? 05-stirthepot And their great indoor practice facility.

Will they live in the past and remember the Rubber Bowl until 2020?

Or a visit to Ball State and their redone stadium.

My serious question for Herd fans:

Can you update your mental images to take into account recent changes in stadia, TV, bowl games, FB scheduling alliances (i.e., Big Ten), etc. ? (after Marshall left a lot of GOOD things happened to the MAC).

"Not a sermon, just a thought..."

Detroilet is the #1 sports city in America? Okay, I would definately put them behind Atlanta (the Olympics) or NY (2 MLB teams). I would also walk calmly through iether of those towns. In Detriot, I would run for my life! And I'm generally not afraid of ghettos.

The Herd never liked the Glass Bowl. Of course, that's likely because they never won there 04-jawdrop02-13-banana

^^It's a yearly award. Detroit won this year based on the success of the Tigers, Pistons, and Wings as well as the quality of facilities and fanbase. I think the "D" earned it even with the Lions.

Interesting that TSN lists the area as "Detroit-Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti".

I guess UofM's FB team added to the Tigs/Pistons/Wings.

Lions and EMU didn't do anything for FB.

Guess everyone knows that. 03-banghead

P.S. Karl,

I do note that Herd fans seem particularly vendicative toward the Rockets?

Does it date back to the '01 MACC championship game which was played at the Glass Bowl and Herd fans thought it belonged in Huntington?

And, of course, the Herd lost which didn't make things any easier to take.

I don't know exactly WHAT the source of the bad blood is, but it's there and it's real. Had they stayed, that might have become our biggest rivalry, even edging out BG (some would say it already did). We lost at their place and listened to 'em crow, and then finally got a shot at 'em here. The Herd fans came in big numbers and they were loud. Frankly, the took over home field advantage for a few minutes during warmups. For once, the Rocket crowd seemed up to it, as if collectively deciding NOBODY was going to take home field from them...especially the Herd. It's the loudest UT crowd I can remember. It started early and kept up the whole game, and it was an amazing atmosphere. The win was pretty sweet.

Winning at THEIR place was even sweeter 02-13-banana

Atlanta? The city that can't sell out any of its teams games, even when they're in the playoffs? (Hello, Braves!)

Atlanta? The city that barely supports its lone BCS school?

Atlanta? The city that screwed up the Olympics so badly that its going to be an uphill battle for any American city to land the Summer Games again?

Surely, you jest.

You obviously haven't been to Detroit in a while, either. The downtown is perfectly fine, and quite lively now. (Comerica, Ford Field, Greektown district, Fox Theatre, Hockeytown Bar and Grill complex, The State, etc.)

Downtown Detroit actually has one of the fastest growing (population) census tracts in Michigan. The nay-sayers will state that, if you only had two (2) people living in downtown Detroit and now there are four (4) that's an increase of 100% But it actually goes much deeper than that. New lofts, new development in the Ren-Cen area are all part of Detroit's Renaissance. I'm impressed.

RE: Why not smack the Herd instead of MAC?
I'll save this thought until November (close to the MACC) and get it out of a smack thread and into its own thread, but DET also has two new casinos (hotel-casinos) coming on line before the '07 MACC.

They would be the MGM H-C and the Motor City H-C.

I believe the Greektown H-C will be online for the '08 MACC.

and with the MACC on a Saturday, folks should be able to get weekend rates at the DET Ren-Cen Marriott on the riverfront which is a marvel (I'll be staying there in late Aug. when I visit DET).

That's bologna. I have seen numerous lists over the year that site Atlanta as the worst sports town in the country. Attendance figures at all 4 major sports there over the years can back that up.

RE: Why not smack the Herd instead of MAC?
Atlanta is a great sports town, but not so much for pro sports - unless the home team is a good one. But just try to get a ticket to a Georgia or Georgia Tech game. College sports are king in the south. After all, this is SEC country.

I'd rather watch college sports myself. Pro sports are too predictable - and there are too many overpaid jerks playing in pro sports. College sports are more unpredictable, and much more exciting.

Frankly though, you can have Atlanta or Detroit - or any other really big city. I avoid really big cities like a plague - unless, for some reason, I can't. Nashville isn't bad, but it's a small town in comparison to Atlanta and Detroit.

Imagine that - calling a city of over 1.2 million small. 01-wingedeagle

.....the Herd struck back this weekend with a win over a pretty decent ECU team...that'll lift them out of the Bottom 10 for the rest of the season I would think.

The Mac doen not get the attention it once did since Marshall left. We brought national attention to your little league. Smack on us now since you couldnt beat us when we were in the league.

The MAC is doing fine, but it's clear that you don't think you're getting the attention you deserve. Why else would a two-post sock puppet resurrect a thread that was last posted upon 283 days ago?

In the words of the late, lamented Bard:

Ding! You are now free
To fly your volleyball team
Out to El Paso.

Phuck off.
