by FSU Sports Info.

THE SERIES
Florida State leads the overall series 56-17 (.767)...Florida State has a .811 home winning percentage (30-7) against Duke...since joining the ACC in 1992, the Seminoles have won 13 of 14 series, with over half of them (7) being three game sweeps...Florida State has lost only one game to the Blue Devils since 2001 posting a record of 14-1...Florida State has not lost a game at Dick Howser Stadium against Duke since 1994 (4-1) a run of 14 straight games...the current home winning streak versus the Blue Devils is the second longest against an ACC opponent (Virginia Tech has not won at Dick Howser since 1989)...the Seminoles 14 game winning streak from 2001-2005, which ended in Durham last season, is the third longest streak against an ACC opponent (27 straight wins against Maryland, 1998-Current, 15 vs. Virginia Tech 1989-2006)

WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR
Florida State took 2 of 3 from the Blue Devils by scores of 5-3, 11-4, and 7-8...Florida State's loss in the finale of the series broke a 14 game winning streak for the Seminoles...the loss was also Florida State's first in Durham since 2001...Gibbs Chapman hit a two-run blast to break open a 3-3 tie in the ninth to give Florida State the victory in the first game...Matt DiBlasi picked up his first win of his career, and Tyler Chambliss earned his seventh save of the season...due to expected rain, the third game was moved up, and the two teams played a Saturday doubleheader...in the first game, Florida State scored in double digits versus Duke for the first time since 2004 with an 11-4 victory...Brant Peacher paced the Seminoles by going 4-for-4 with a homerun and three RBIs...Peacher tied single game career highs in hits and home runs in the game...Jack Rye and Ryne Jernigan also went yard for the Seminoles in the blowout victory...Rye's home run was the first of his collegiate career...Michael Hyde picked up his sixth win of the season with a strong 5 2/3 innings, giving up all four runs while striking out four Blue Devils...in the finale, Florida State mustered a strong rally after falling behind 5-0, but eventually lost 8-7...Bryan Henry gave a valiant effort in relief of starter Mark Sauls, pitching 5 2/3 and striking out six in taking the loss...Duke came out of the gate hot, picking up five runs in the first inning...Florida State tied it in the fifth, as Brant Peacher and Gibbs Chapman each had two RBIs in the rally...in the ninth, with Duke leading 8-5, Jack Rye and Josh Spivey each had RBIs to cut the lead to 8-7, but the Seminoles could get no closer.

IF LAST YEAR WAS AN INDICATION LOOK FOR FSU TO...
- Shut down the Duke hitters. In three games, FSU held Duke to a .267 average (27-101), and a .192 average with runners in scoring position (5-26)
- Finish the inning. With two outs in an inning, FSU pitching held Duke hitters to a .212 average (7-33)
- Knock in runs. Florida State had 23 RBIs in the three game series, paced by Brent Peacher's six and Gibbs Chapman's four.
- Get on base early. The leadoff batter in an inning hit .519 (14-27) for the Seminoles.
- Perform under pressure. With the bases loaded, Florida State hit an amazing .750 (3-4). FSU also managed seven RBIs with two outs in an inning.

ERROR FREE
Although there is a lot of experience on the 2006 Seminole team, it is still a young group. Since the injury to Danny Diaz, the Seminoles are regularly starting seven freshmen or sophomores in their line-up and there is not a single senior starting in the field. With that much youth in the line-up the team's 22-2 record and .324 batting average are impressive but nothing stands out more than the .972 fielding percentage. FSU is now starting a true freshman at catcher and shortstop and sophomores at first, second and in left and right field. Despite so much youth at almost every position the Seminoles have played error-free ball in nine of 24 games this season and committed one error or less 17 times. This year's team is off to the best start since 2001 when it comes to fielding percentage. Through the first 24 games of a season, the 2006 team is the only one over the last six years with a fielding percentage above .970. The highest fielding percentage for an entire season in the Mike Martin era was .973 in 1994. The 2005 squad posted the second-best fielding percentage in the Martin era at .967 and this could become just the second time in more than 25 years the Seminoles have posted a fielding percentage of .965 or better in back-to-back seasons. The last teams to do that were the 1993 and 1994 squads.

SEVEN OVER THREE
Florida State will enter this weekend's series with Duke hitting .324 as a team, which would be the sixth-highest average in school history if it held up. With conference series versus North Carolina, Miami, Georgia Tech, Clemson and NC State just to name a few still on the horizon, that number may come down some but it doesn't diminish how well this team is hitting. Eight of FSU's nine regular starters are hitting above .300 and six are hitting .348 or better. With Ryan Staruss' addition to the starting line-up, FSU has two .400 hitters as he joins Shane Robinson. The Seminoles projected starting line-up for this weekend is hitting a combined .364 on the season.

SOMEONE SCORE IN THE FIRST
The 2006 Seminoles have done a pretty good job of getting on the board early this season. Florida State has scored in the first inning 10 times this year and gone 9-1 in those games. That stat isn't that surprising but what is a shocker is that the seven times and opponent has scored in the first inning FSU has gone on to win all of those games. So whenever a run is scored in the first frame it is a good sign for the Seminoles no matter who scores it since FSU is 16-1 anytime somebody gets on the board to start a ballgame.

FSU 140 002 00X 7 13 1

W - Henry (7-0) L - Otero (4-2)

Henry one inning shy of a no-hitter
by Drew Hankin

For eight complete innings, Bryan Henry kept Duke in check, giving up no hits, no walks, and only allowed one base runner on an error, but after 100+ pitches in the ninth inning, the Duke Blue Devils finally snapped the no-hitter, and wound up getting a couple runs in the process. That couldn't take away from a spectacular outing by Henry, and a solid performance all around by the Seminole baseball team, with a 7-2 win in Friday night's ACC series opener.

Before the ninth, Duke's sole base runner came in the fourth inning when shortstop Buster Posey threw wide of first base and drew Dennis Guinn off the bag. Other than that, Henry was perfect heading into the final frame before back-to-back singles and a hit batter loaded the bases before a two-run single with two outs ruined the shutout. With Henry at 113 pitches, FSU turned to reliever Brian Chambers to get the final out. Four pitches later, a line drive to second baseman Tony Thomas Jr ended the game.

The Florida State offense didn't do too badly either, recording seven runs on thirteen hits, most of it against Blue Devil starter Danny Otero who came into the game with a 4-1 record and a 0.75 ERA. Five eminole
batters had multi-hit games, with right fielder Jack Rye picking up three RBIs and first baseman Dennis Guinn with two.

The Noles picked up a run in the first inning when center fielder Shane Robinson singled to left, stole second, and went to third when the throw from the catcher bounced into the outfield, before scoring on an infield single Rye.

An inning later, the Seminoles loaded the bases when Posey singled up the middle, went to third on a double to center by Thomas, and designated hitter Mark Gildea walked with one out. Robinson then reached on a fielder's choice, and an error on the third baseman allowed Posey to score FSU's second run of the game. A Rye single to right brought then brought home two more runs before Guinn's base hit to left brought home the final run of the inning, and gave the Tribe a 5-0 lead.

Duke reliever Colin Ratcliffe gave up more runs to the Noles in the bottom of the sixth inning when Robinson singled to left, stole second and third, and scored on another Guinn single. Posey's second base hit of the ballgame moved Guinn to third before a Thomas RBI-single scored the final run of the game for Florida State.

After missing four games with a wrist injury, catcher Danny Diaz returned to the lineup going 0-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.

FSU improved to 23-2 on the season and 6-1 in the ACC, while the Blue Devils fell to 8-19 and just 1-6 in conference play. Game two of the series is scheduled for 6:00 on Saturday with Tyler Chambliss (6-0, 2.00 ERA) on the mound for the Noles against Jimmy Saris (0-3, 5.92 ERA) for Duke. The first 1000 fans in the ballpark on Saturday will receive free Florida State Baseball t-shirts.

Game 2
Quote:Tyler Chambliss And Jack Rye Lead No. 1 FSU Baseball Past Duke 12-4
Seminoles score double digit runs for the tenth time in 26 games this season.

March 25, 2006

Score by Innings R H E
-------------------------------------------
Duke................ 011 010 010 - 4 9 1
Florida State....... 231 011 13X - 12 13 2
-------------------------------------------

Tallahassee, FL - Following Bryan Henry should be a tough job but not for Seminole starter Tyler Chambliss. The junior cruised for seven innings allowing just one earned run and upping his record to 7-0 on the season as No. 1 Florida State (24-2, 7-1) won its 29th straight game at home 12-4 over Duke (8-20, 1-7). Jack Rye paced the offense with a homer and four RBIs as the Seminoles scored double digit runs for the tenth time this season.

"We were very pleased that we scored in seven of our eight at bats tonight," said FSU Head Coach Mike Martin. "We were pleased with the little things we did. We moved runners, we had good at bats and created situations that produced runs. We had some very good at bats."

"I felt good out there," said Chambliss of his performance. "I feel like I threw the ball well. They didn't really hit the ball that well off of me. They had a couple line drives to center that were right at Shane (Robinson). Basically anything near Shane he is going to catch. I had a couple two strike at bats where I felt I could have struck the guy out but I left the pitch up. It felt like I threw good tonight."

One night after Henry carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning while striking out 12 Blue Devils, Chambliss continued to show he is more than just a "two" in FSU's vaunted 1-2 combination. The Live Oak native fanned eight more batters as he raised his K total to 59 on the year just one behind Henry who has 60. The two Seminole starters are now a combined 14-0 and Chambliss has fanned 33 batters in his three ACC starts.

"It is good to come back and see if I could match what Henry did," said Chambliss. "What he did the night before really was amazing. If things continue this way, it is going to be tough to beat us. That's the way it is going to be and that's the way it should be."

Chambliss got off to a fast start in the first inning. The junior struck out the side sandwiched around one walk. Then Robinson came up and led off the game for FSU with a solid single to left center and then moved into scoring position when Duke starter Jeff Saris (0-4) was called for a balk. Dennis Guinn reached first when he was hit by a pitch putting two Seminoles aboard. Both runners moved into scoring position on a ground out and then an error by the Blue Devil second baseman brought both runners home.

A hit, error and sac bunt put Duke in position to get on the board in the second with two runners in scoring position and just one away. A groundout plated Duke's first run of the game as the Blue Devils halved the lead but an attempt to steal home ended the inning as Chambliss flipped the ball to Kyle Maxie who tagged Javi Socorro out at the plate.

Mark Gildea opened the bottom half of the second by drawing a walk and Maxie followed with a free pass of his own. Ryan Strauss moved both runners up a base on a sac bunt. Saris got the second out on a strikeout looking but the hurler could not get out of the jam as Rye sent a 3-2 pitch over the screen in right making it a 5-1 game. It was the seventh HR of the season for Rye, which is tied for the team lead.

"I just got that up in the air," said Rye of his homer. "I hit it well. It was a good AB. I got a bunch of pitches that at bat. He made a few good pitches and I was able to foul them off then he left one over the plate. I tried to do as much damage as was possible."

Duke threatened again in the third as FSU's second error of the game opened the door. A hit, fielder's choice and error loaded the bases with two away. An infield hit allowed the Blue Devils to cut the lead to 5-2

The Seminoles came right back in the third off new Duke pitcher Andrew Wolcott. Buster Posey drew a walk and Tony Thomas, Jr. doubled to put runners on second and third with one away. Gildea then drove in Posey on a sac fly to right field.

In the top of the fifth a walk, steal and base hit put runners on the corners for Duke as they continued to hand around in a 6-2 game. A ground out to first brought in the third run of the game once again cutting the FSU lead in half.

Guinn and Ryne Malone led off the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles as FSU looked to answer Duke's run in the top of the inning. Tallahassee native Tony Bajoczky, who started as the DH and moved to the mound in the fourth, got the next two outs moving the Blue Devils closer to getting out of the jam but he could not close down the threat. Gildea drove in his second run of the night on a single up the middle putting FSU back in front by four runs at 7-3.

Robinson started another FSU rally in the sixth. The junior singled and stole second before Rye drove him home with his 30th RBI of the year and his fourth of the night. His 30 RBIs are just one shy of the 31 he had as a freshman in 71 games.

"I worked really hard and I told myself it would come," said Rye of his increased homerun and RBI totals. "I never really think about it. It is happening and it is great. I am just going to keep playing my game."

New Duke pitcher Jimmy Gallagher opened the bottom of the seventh by walking the first two batters he faced. Both runners moved into scoring position on a fly ball out and a steal and then Ryan McArdle sacrificed the ninth run of the game home as FSU went in front 9-3.

In the bottom of the eighth the Blue Devils loaded the bases with one away off new pitcher Matt DiBlasi by virtue of a couple base hits and a hit batter. The Seminoles got the second out on a force at second allowing one run to come in but DiBlasi fanned the next batter to end the threat.

Guinn opened the bottom half of the eighth with a double off the wall in left field. Malone then collected a double of his own, this one high off the screen in right center plating Guinn with the 10th run. Thomas recorded FSU's 11th hit of the night with an RBI single through the left side as the lead grew to 11-4. Danny Diaz then came up and singled to put runners on the corners. Travis Anderson followed by ripping a double down the left field run as the 12th run came home.

Florida State continues conference play versus Duke Sunday at 12:00 p.m. as they conclude the series. Game Tracker will be available for every game this season along with a live radio broadcasts available on WFLA locally and free on the Internet at seminoles.com.

Game 3
Quote:No. 1 FSU Completes Sweep Of Duke With 15-5 Win In The Finale
Seminoles pound out a season-high 19 hits as they improve to 25-2 and 8-1 in ACC.

March 26, 2006

Score by Innings R H E

Duke.................. 022 000 100 - 5 7 3
Florida State....... 612 030 30X - 15 19 0
-------------------------------------------

Tallahassee, FL - Three games and 34 runs after the Florida State/Duke series began Friday night, the No. 1 Seminole baseball team completed its series sweep of the Blue Devils with an emphatic 15-5 victory Sunday. Florida State (25-2, 8-1) pounded out a season high 19 hits in winning their 30th straight game at Dick Howser Stadium. Seventeen Seminoles got an at bat in the game, 12 recorded hits and seven had RBIs.

The Seminoles broke out to a six run lead in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as the team improved to 19-1 in games where either team scores a run in the game's first frame. Michael Hyde (5-0) picked up the victory over Duke (8-21, 1-8) as the Seminole starters improved their record to 24-0 on the season.

"We had some good at bats today," said FSU Head Coach Mike Martin. "I think the first inning was their undoing. We got two extra outs and took full advantage of it scoring six runs. That is kind of a big mountain to climb. I am just very pleased with the way we are playing right now."

The Seminole offense had another good day as the team scored 15 or more runs in a game for the fourth time this season and double digit runs in a game for 11th time. The Seminoles are now averaging over nine runs scored per game.

"The offense has been doing this all year no matter who steps on the mound," said Seminole first baseman Dennis Guinn. "We are scoring runs, 1-9 everyone is getting on base and the guys behind them are moving them up and getting RBIs. All year it has been like this."

Guinn's production has been one of the biggest boosts for the offense this year. The sophomore hit another homerun Sunday as he leads the team with eight. He is also the only Seminole with 40 RBIs this season as he knocked in three versus Duke in the finale to raise his total to 41 on the year. He is hitting .388 and has a team-best .757 slugging percentage.

"I am getting more comfortable everyday," said Guinn of his performance. "Last year I didn't play that much and it is kind of tough to get out there and just jump into a game. This year I am getting more comfortable every at bat and every inning. It feels really good."

Guinn wasn't the only star at the plate for the Seminoles Sunday. Danny Diaz returned to the starting line-up behind the plate and tied a career-high with three RBIs. Travis Anderson recorded a career-high three RBIs as well as he hit the first homer of his FSU career. Ryne Malone went yard also as FSU hit three homeruns in a game for the fourth time this season. Last year FSU had three or more homers in a game five times in 73 games.

Hyde got off to a little bit of rocky start early on but bounced back and settled down in picking up the win. The junior pitched five innings gave up six hits and four runs. He walked two batters and fanned four. Four relievers each worked an inning and combined to allow just one run while fanning six and issuing just one walk.

"Michael Hyde struggled a little bit early but I was very pleased with the way he got control of the ballgame," said Martin. "He started throwing his change-up and curveball to location and did a very good job settling down."

Duke opened the game defensively with a two-base error on a deep fly ball hit by Shane Robinson. The All-American, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, moved to third on a fly out and Guinn then got the scoreboard working early as he hammered his team-leading eighth homer of the season over the left field wall. The two-run bomb gave Guinn a team high 40 RBIs at that point.

"It was a 2-0 count and I didn't want to try and do too much with it," said Guinn of the homerun. "I tried to make him pay for leaving a pitch up."

Duke starter Jonathan Anderson (1-3) got the second out of the inning before Posey knocked a double the bounced off the bag at second base. Anderson walked Thomas and then another error loaded the bases. Strauss cashed in on the error as he doubled home two more runs putting FSU up 4-0. Danny Diaz then continued to pile the runs on as he plated two more with a single through the left side of the infield.

The Blue Devils looked to answer in the top of the second as Hyde loaded the bases with just one away on two hits and a walk. A base hit got Duke on the board with its first run of the game. Hyde got the next out on a fly ball but he walked the next batter on four straight pitches to make it a 6-2 game.

Posey came through with his second double of the game in the second inning, this one brought home a run as the FSU lead grew to 7-2.

As they have done all weekend, the Blue Devils battled back once again recording back-to-back doubles making it a 7-3 game. A ground out drove in another Duke run making the score 7-4 before Hyde got out of the third.

Diaz delivered another RBI in the bottom of the inning as he singled in Strauss who was running on the pitch from second. Robinson then came up with a double ripped down the left field line plating Diaz as the Seminoles plated their ninth run.

FSU went back on the attack in the fifth as a Robinson hit and steal on top of Duke's third error of the game put runners on the corners. Guinn then drove in another run on a sac fly as the Seminoles scored 10 runs for the 11th time this season. The runs continued to come for FSU as Malone went yard off the circus tent beyond the right field screen plating runs number 11 an 12.

After the Seminole staff held Duke off the scoreboard for three straight innings, the Blue Devils got a run back in the seventh courtesy of a sacrifice fly making it a 12-5 game. A Jimmy Gallagher double put two more runners in scoring position with two away but Brent Marsh closed the door on the potential rally.

Sean Stuyverson led off the seventh with the first base hit of his career and then another first for an FSU player as Anderson went yard for his first FSU homer making the score 15-5 as FSU tied a season high for hits with 17.

Florida State will go after its 31st straight home win this Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. versus North Florida.
