2011 and 2014. Maybe a place for USF to play the Irish? Granted they could play at RJS, but since that is USF's home field and these games are still going to be designated as ND home games, might be an opportunity for them.

its not very likeky. the citrus bowl likes teams that fill hotels.....usf doesnt fit the bill

Given the proximity to Orlando, though, neither would Fl*rida, Miami or FSU.

Then again, I don't think the Citrus Bowl actually owns any hotels, so I doubt that's there motivation. Right now they need something to use to help raise funds to upgrade that dump, and since UCF is no longer a tenant, they would be hard pressed to convince anybody to spend a bunch of money for essentially two bowl games and nothing else.

USFFan

The noles are 4+ hours away ... they will fill rooms.. the gators would bring 40k to that game .. yeah they would take them.. UM is further than USF and would use at least a few rooms.. and they would bring in more semi locals to watch.. USF would use no rooms and not bring that many fans either.

the odds are 75% that improvements will be approved.. of the 3 projects the citrus bowl is by far the cheapest. I would argue that it has a bigger impact on tourism than the Magic house.. thats filled by locals... the citrus and champs bowls are out of towners.. they have other things going on at citrus other than the bowls.. though the bowl games are the biggies..

Teams from Florida may not fill hotels, but then again they may. However, I bet the restaurants and bars wouldn't care all that much. The city will make money if fans come to the game and fill the stadium, no matter when - or how - they come.

Did you know that the Sentinel just showed that all the Citrus Bowl events combined only bring in 70,000 folks from out-of-town per year?

The new Arena (which I'm still against until the Magic forks over more $$$), which will have a ton of events OTHER than Magic games...would easily surpass that number.

Yes...Citrus Bowl project is the cheapest...but with the lowest overall support...that's why the Florida Citrus Sports folks are trying to say ND won't come to Orlando without improvements to the Stadium...even though ND said they want to come no matter what the stadium will be like...as ND wants more FLA PUB and EXPOSURE in this hot recruiting bed...so more recruits can see them up close.

We will see who they get BUT I bet is more on who NOTRE DAME chooses and NOT who the Citrus Bowl wants.
You can scratch Miami off that list,ND wants nothing to do with UM since they last played. UF I really doubt look at UF's away schedules and that will tell you everything. FSU has committed to play in Orlando in 2012 and 2013, doubt they will do it for more years.
Could it be a team not from Florida? Probably. USF's only hope is that Notre Dame chooses to use one of those games to meet the three BE games per year they agreed to.
But dont fool yourselves NOTRE DAME will call the shots here just like it always does.

Yep, Miami admins would have to issue ND an apology for the behavior of their fans at the dump called the Orange Bowl, before the Hurricanes will see another series with the Irish. And even if said apology was to made (unlikely), the Irish will never go to the Orange Bowl again.

Also, if the Citrus Bowl games were going to be against high profile team suchs as a Miami or an Alabama, there would have to be ticket-sharing and TV-revenue sharing for both involved.

Based upon the earlier Alamo deal, that doesn't look likely for these games.

A shame really considering that the reason why ND did the barnstorming in the past was because their stadium was so small that they made more money by playing these games at other stadia and playing good to great opponents.

A Miami-ND series would probably generate lots of bucks from those of us old enough to remember the Saints vs Sinners match-ups in the 80s.

The more time passes, the less likely such a series will generate money.

Agreed, on all accounts.

Neil

Another big reason that the Irish went barnstorming in the past is that the anti-Catholic bigots at Michigan (Fritz Crisler and Fielding Yost) got the then Western Conference (now Big Ten) to boycott playing ND and rejected ND's bid to join that conference.

ND decided to play anyone, anywhere. They traveled by train to Pittsburgh to play Carnegie Tech, to New York to play Army and to Los Angeles to play USC because they had little choice.

It did work out for them, though.

I am like you, I would like these to be against big time teams. Most ND fans feel that way.

These games are about exposure and recruiting, mostly. ND is trying to show that it is indeed a national team by playing "home" games all over the country, especially in prime recruiting territory.

I read somewhere a few months ago, that ND-Florida was going to happen in the C-Bowl during those years. I don't think its definite, but that's what will probably happen.

I really doubt youll see Florida play in the Citrus Bowl. They make tons of money at HOME and will lose money going to play in Citrus Bowl. UF plays ONE OCC game away and thats FSU every other year.
They have even tried to move the Georgia-UF game back on campus.
Also a ND-UF at the Citrus Bowl would be more like a UF home game than a Notre Dame one. So the chances for the Gators to be the opponent is slim and none.

With every game, both at home and away on national TV and with the independent scheduling that takes it already across the country, if ND thinks it needs to go barnstorming to show that it is a 'national team', then we are witnessing the end of its days as an independent.

Good luck in the Big 10 next decade.

FSU is unlikely mainly because they are scheduling an OOC opponent at the Citrus for the years in-between when ND is doing it - in 2012 and 2013.
