wvucrazed Wrote:WVU has hit 70k for games in the past, as I recall, when the capacity was higher and standing room only was permitted. I doubt expansion would happen anytime soon on Mountaineer Field - perhaps if we keep putting Top 10 teams on the field - but I don't think we'd have a problem getting close to 70k if we keep winning.
That's the key, though. All those extra seats turn to empty seats in a hurry when you start losing games.
-- To my knowledge WVU hit 70k once in its history, the 1993 game against Miami. Afterwards, the Morgantown fire department relaized that it was such a hazzard to have so many fans in "standing room only" areas that they never allowed that many people in again.
-- I agree that WVU could draw 70k for really big games. This yrs UL/WVU could do that if it were on Saturday and the seating was still available. However, I think WVU made the right call with cutting back a few seats. The luxary boxes they built in their place get used every week and demand for tickets encourages more fans to by season tickets.

Maybe for most BE teams, but I can envision a Rutgers program that keeps winning for the next 3 years and in the largest metropolitan area in the US, starts to really capture the hearts of those people. The potential for that program is simply amazing imo. I would love to see a BE program with attendance in the 80,000 plus. I also think that Louisville could also get to that level in the next decade, if they keep at the level they are at right now.
WVU is already over 60,000. Louisville is on the way. Rutgers won't be far behind if they keep winning. NYC loves a winner. Especially if they've been a loser for a long time like Rutgers. Cinderella is huge in the big city.
That's almost half the conference. WVU and Louisville are there, and Rutgers is close. South Florida may not be too far behind. If USF makes it 4, that IS half the conference. All we'll need then is for the rest of the conference to step up. If a small state like West Virginia can fill a stadium almost twice as large as its largest city, then other universities should be able to do the same.
