Urban sprawl at it finest!04-cheers
Technically it's suburban sprawl that NC is experiencing. Urban conditions require densities and form that matches an existing urban core, or are developed as a completely new core out of a suburban context. So unless the high urban centers of Raleigh or Charlotte are encroaching on the 'boonies (which we term urban expansion), then the phenomena is suburban sprawl.

At least, as is taught in urban and regional planning programs. 04-cheers

Fair enough...

North Carolina does not move up (skyscrapers), they spread out.

North Carolina isn't exactly what you'd call the center of urban renewal in the nation. 01-wingedeagle

Also ECU fans tend to leave the area and job market, where as many ECU fans tend to move to Raleigh, Charlotte, DC, etc.

Also UNC and NCSU have the media, so they get a lot more fans that have nothing to do with their universities.

Sorry, but the above sounds like excuses, especially the Raleigh part which is basically only about an hour and a half away from Greenville.

In one post you want us to believe that ECU fans travel 24K strong on a consistent basis to Durham (slightly further away than Raleigh) and now in another you want us to believe that ECU fans can't travel from Raleigh, from Charlotte (which while 4 hours away supposedly is crazy about ECU as well), or from the Tidewater Region (less than 3 hours away and another area where Pirates fans say they have support and alum) to ECU for Saturday afternoon football games.

Which is it? Is ECU a crazed football-centric university that is so far above UNC (and slightly above NC State) in terms of their enthusiasm for football or is it not? If it is, distances of less than 4 hours of travel on a Saturday afternoon shouldn't be a problem.

Let's be honest and wrap this up - ECU is stuck out in the boonies away from the population centers of the state and will always have a tough time drawing fans (and dollar support for its university) in comparison with its neighbors in the triangle region until such time that its population and economic strength grows to compete with the other three metro areas of the state.

Until such time, ECU has done a good job under trying circumstances (not being strategically located in the state, not being in a great conference, not having access to the BCS) to develop a small, but rabid following of corps fans that with some more advantages (such as BE membership) - may, and I stress the word MAY - develop into another VT which also faced similar trying circumstances.

Cheers,
Neil

Good, fair post.

ECU has a lot of POSITIVES going for it.

ECU is a very good school (academically) and will only continue to get better through the coming years (as will most other schools).

ECU has some of the most passionate fans around...just like many other teams located in the Southeast.

I really don't know what you are trying to state.

Most cities and urban (and suburban) areas in North Carolina do not need renewal like Detriot, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, etc... (I guess you could argue for areas in Charlotte)

Most would refer to these areas as "new" or "young".

There wasn't much urban area at all in NC not too long ago. If it wasn't around Charlotte, the coast, or tobacco road, there wasn't much available in the not too distant past. It's kind of hard to renew urban areas that are still new enough not to need renewal.

I am not really sure where you are going with these comments.

North Carolina is the 10th largest state if we ranked by population (i.e. That means there are 40 states with less population).

Granted NC does not have a "mega city" like Houston, San Francisco, New York City, LA, or Chicago... The majority of the population is spread throughout the central (piedmont) part of the state. As we commented above, the suburban sprawl is how North Carolina cities are designed.

MASN to Televise 9 of 12 East Carolina University Football Games in 2007

Network to feature four live and five delayed-broadcast Pirates games
Deal with CSTV brings even more college football to MASN

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- Carrying even more North Carolina sports programming, the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network announced that it will televise nine of the 12 East Carolina Pirates football games in the 2007 season.
The addition of nine ECU Pirates games to MASN's already extensive NCAA football schedule will offer fans from Harrisburg, PA to Charlotte, NC even more local football action. MASN will televise ECU match-ups with Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Southern Mississippi, Houston, UTEP, UAB, Memphis, Marshall and Tulane.
Led by head coach Skip Holtz, the ECU Pirates went 7-6 in the 2006 season with a trip to the Papajohns.com Bowl. The team competes in Conference USA.

MASN will also carry the weekly Skip Holtz Show, where the third year head coach offers in depth game analysis and fields questions from fans.

"We are excited that MASN has become a broadcast partner with ECU Football," Pirate Head Coach Skip Holtz said. "Anytime our program can get additional television exposure, especially in MASN's seven-state territory, it benefits our fans and gives our recruiting efforts a shot in the arm."

MASN is North Carolina's home for the Big East Football Game of the Week, as the network televises the best weekly football match-ups from one of the nation's most exciting conferences.

"East Carolina University has die-hard fans and alumni throughout North Carolina. We are proud to offer them televised Pirates football all season long on North Carolina's must-have sports network," said MASN Spokesman, Todd Webster.

It appears one of your TV partners/ DC based station believes we bring something to the table in NC, as well as 6 other states, and several major media markets in the mid Atlantic to have a partnership and put us on TV 9 times. BTW the Raleigh paper that did that poll still gives us a lot of coverage and our own link with the other so called major schools in the state. My belief all along is media market argument are irrelevant if you don't account the actual pull with in the market and if that pull extends to other media markets.
