Former Notre Dame QB Frazer picks UConn over Cincinnati
By Joe Schad

Former Notre Dame quarterback Zach Frazer will transfer to the University of Connecticut, his father Dave said Sunday.
Frazer chose UConn over Cincinnati.
"Zach really feels he can go to UConn and win a Big East title," Dave Frazer said.
Joe Schad covers college football for ESPN.
I believe that he is a significant pickup for UConn. I hope he does very well.
He and his father were both class acts during the entire transfer process. Good luck to Zach.

I don't know about winning a Big East title, but Connecticut needs him badly.

RE: Zach Frazer to UConn
This is good for UConn clearly. Congrats.
As a Bearcat I think we offered him a better shot to be on a conference championship team. The problem is that we could not gurantee that he would be the QB of that conference championship team.
Consider our projected 2008 QB situation:
1. Ben Mauk (Grad School - expected to apply for extra yr of eligibility)
2. Dustin Grutza (Senior - 2 yr starter as Fr & So)
3. Craig Carey (Junior - local HS star)
4. Chazz Anderson ***(RS Soph) & Zach Collaros ***(RS Soph)
5. Dominick Britt (Fr)***
Add to this that we are in the running with Zac Dysert as well from Ohio, and you can see that although there are possibilities, there are no guarantees. I think Frazer had to go with a guarantee of playing.
Good luck to him, except when playing us.

UConn may actually have a QB for a change. They haven't had one lately.

RE: Zach Frazer to UConn
This is HUGE for us.
While a BE title is not likely, we should have a strong O-line in 2008m along with this kid, Donald Brown, a couple of studs at WR, etc...our offense will put up big-time points. Problem is, our defense (except at LB where we have recruited some studs) will still be well below the Rutgers of the world. But a bowl should be coming soon at least.

Question for the Bearcats...has Mauk shown a specific reason to think he'll improve solidly over his career numbers? I just ask, as he's coming off a season ending injury and his career numbers are not pretty.
148-273, 54.2%, 5.58 YPA, 4 TD, 10 INT
From what I understand, he started 3 games in 2004, was the starter over the first 6 games in 2005 before being benched for the last half of the season, and then started the opener against Syracuse last fall before being injured. He essentially has 1 start and 2 total game appearances since Oct 2005. Will he be improved with time off and a different system?

Forget Mauk. Grutza is the better option, albeit not much better. UC needs another option.

Great question. Kelly seems absolutely convinced that Mauk is the answer for one year. Mauk is the prototypical QB for Kelly's system but has you said his college record is spotty. Coach Kelly's worked wonders wherever he's been so I take him at his word.

We'll see. I'm not so optomistic about Mauk.
