I heard that all 4 of our incoming freshman looked really good. Gilchrist and Garrison looked the best apparently. Did anyone actually go?

Here are my notes/comments from immediately after the games last night...

Got there a couple minutes into the first game.

General Impressions:

NCM: Very athletic. Wasn't that aggressive about getting the ball...sort of waited for someone to swing it to him until he got fed up and played more selfishly in the 2nd half. Had a couple SICK dunks. Free throw shooting left something to be desired. He was really good though -- will contribute.

McCray: Nicy pony tail. Also a very nice jumper. He crossed some guys up a few times and made some nice passes in the lane and one great thread the needle pass on the break.

Joynes: Not very athletic. Got stuffed twice in one posession by that Steenberg guy (Richmond)

The Georgetown bigman from LA whose name I forgot: Nice combination of jumper/inside moves. Very impressive.

Pele Paelay: I wonder if he knows Duany Duany.

Jermaine Thomas: Didn't show anything.

Todd Galloway: Nice jumper

Lee Melchionni: Missed a dunk. Slow. Won't be effective at Duke.

Rick Cornett: ND. Has that Mike Mardesich "I have to give 110% to be average" thing. Big, athletic body though. Should improve.

MVPs were two guys I didn't notice during the game -- Nick George of Montrose Christian and Robert Hite (Cincy). I wonder if he played AAU ball with Kelly Hite.

Game Two:

The layup lines (actually dunk lines) were amazing. Evan Burns is the best dunker in the world.

Everyone got pants 4 sizes too big...it was funny to watch the guys try to dribble the ball and hold their pants up at the same time.

Garrison: Had 6 quick points...finished with about 18. He needs to work on going up strong around the paint. He got stuffed a couple times (once by goofy white guy going to Iowa) on the break b/c he'd try to finish with these dainty fingerrolls instead of doing something aggressive. He really needs to be more aggressive in the paint. Shades of Tahj?????

John Gilchrist: Brought me out of my seat a few times with his ballhandling. That was in the 2nd half though. First half he was solid, but unspectacular. Hit a halfcourt 3 at the buzzer. 2nd half he showed he could hit an open 3 and penetrated well. He also did two SICK moves with the ball. First example...running down the court at almost full speed he dribbled the ball with his knees for about 20 feet before going back to his hands and dishing to someone for an assist.
The next one is hard to explain...you guys have to try to visualize this...and then speed it up as fast as you can b/c JG is David Blaine quick with his hands. He crossed over from his right hand to his left and then in a millisecond crossed back to his right by bringing the ball around the BACK OF HIS NECK and over to the right side of his body. Everyone there...including all the players were beside themselves over it. Amazing. I like JG. Had something like 13 points.

Sean May: He's really damned good. Finishes pretty well around the basket...hit about 3 threes and showed some decent post moves. He's very good. Co-MVP.

Amare Stoudamire: NBA body...college game. He's athletic enough to go to the pros, but his game is lacking A LOT of refinement. You know how a lot of Kwame Brown's moves look very mechanical this year...just b/c he's young and doesn't have that feel for the game yet? Stoudemire has that times 10. I wouldn't touch him if I was a GM. Co-MVP.

Carmelo Anthony: Best all-around player on the court. Can do it all...but his perimeter game needs improvement, as does his left hand. He's great at getting to the hoop...crossed some guys up badly. Only went right though.

I think everyone except Igoudala was in double figures for the White team.

Redick: you know what you're getting. He's Langdon all over again.

Michael Thompson: Biger than Casey Sanders. Looked pretty active, but not that impressive. By the way, each Duke player got Booooed loudly when they were announced. Funny stuff.

Shav Randolph: His mom cuts his steak for him and he's not interested in girls. On top of that, his game was very unspectacular. Hit a nice three and had a few other junk baskets...I'm not worried.

McCants: I thought I heard somewhere that he can't shoot. That's wrong. He's really really good. If D'oh can get these guys to play as a unit, UNC might be able to get back to .500 in the ACC next year and then do damage the year after that. But then again, this is D'oh. Expect transfers and tears.

Dee Brown: Something about him really impresses me. He's confident and fast. I like him a lot.

Denham Brown: Has a nice feel for the game. Good intermediate jumper.

Kelenna Azubuike: Muscular guy. 6'5" might be pushing it though. He's pretty good.

I almost forgot Jarret Jack: Wow!!! He is VERY GOOD. Great ballhandler...similar gangsta moves as Gilchrist with a better jumper and better overall game. Jack will be a star at GT and won't be there for 4 years.

Evan Burns: can dunk like a mofo. Also almost lost his pants at least 200 times. Seriously. He can dunk. Jumps higher than Wilcox. Looks like Gulian Gary.

I'm tired and can't think of anything worthwile to add to any other players.
Got hooked up with free seats...midcourt...8th row or so...Morgan Wootten was 2 rows behind me. Pretty cool night.

Oh, Fabolous's performance sucked...the acoustics in there were terrible and he wasn't exactly charismatic.

That's all.
