Acid Staining Concrete
Anybody else tried their hand at doing this or do it as a profession? I just finished doing my first room and am pretty happy with the results. Make sure you wear a respirator. ACK!
We had seen it in a few houses we have looked at so when the kids had rotted out the carpet in the playroom I gave it a shot. It only costs about $.30 per square foot so the price can't be beat. Ready for my next job in which I will get a little crazier with laying out tape to get a 12x12 tile effect or maybe 18x18. Just bored and buzzed with acid fumes and wondering if anyone else had done this.

Me and the missus looked into it several years ago...I came away with the impression that it works better on newer concrete vs. stuff that's been in place for decades...I do like the look of it, as the design opportunities are endless.

Our slab is 35 years old and it did great. I think the problem with older concrete is if you are going to try and do a patio or something outside that is exposed to the elements. The lime leaches (sp?) out and that is what the acid acts with to give the marble look. Looks great now that I am finished and saved a bunch over laminate or ceramic.

I'll try to get one tomorrow but our digital camera has been acting up. Painting in the room right now. The hardest part of the job was getting all of the old paint up from the original building of the house. They didn't care much about what they spilled and left on the slabs back then.
Here is a pic I found that mirrors what our's looks like. Mocha.

Tommy, Where did you get your supplies to do the acid staining? My wife and I are seriously considering staining our floors this fall. Are you still happy with the results?

How difficult is such staining? And (being utterly incapable as a handyman), is there any contractor anyone would recommend?

RE: Acid Staining Concrete
Sorry, I don't check out the NTR boards as often as I should. Check on ebay for the supplies. A place out of Oklahoma sells on there and that is where I got the stuff. They still look great. If you are not into carpentry (putting in 1/4 round or baseboards) the actual staining is easy enough for anybody to do and then hire someone to do the woodwork. I have no idea what someone would charge to do it for you but if you can do it yourself the cost is around $.30 a square foot.
