GAME RECAP...
Raymond Priester rushed for a school-record 263 yards and Emory Smith scored on three short touchdowns as #24 Clemson won its fourth straight game with a 34-17 victory over Duke.
The Tigers (7-3, 6-2 ACC) are in the top 25 for the first time since September 5th of last year, while Duke (3-7, 1-6) lost for the sixth time in the last seven games.
Priester finished with 32 carries and became the second
sophomore in Clemson history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season
when he rushed for a career-long 44 yards in the first quarter.
Priester joined Terry Allen, who ran for 1,192 yards in 1988.
Clemson, which entered the game with the nation's seventh-ranked
rushing offense, rushed for 433 yards on 65 carries. The Tigers
threw the ball just nine times, completing two of them.
Smith, a short-yardage specialist, gained just 33 yards on eight
carries, and scored on a pair of two-yard runs that gave the
Tigers a 14-0 lead early in the second period. Jeff Sauve kicked
a 28-yard field goal with seven seconds left for a 17-0 halftime
lead.
Priester's 43-yard run with 8:24 left in the third quarter
extended Clemson's lead to 24-0 on a 43-yard run.
The Blue Devils got on the board with 5:24 left in the third
quarter as Spence Fisher connected with Marc Wilson for a
nine-yard score and cut the deficit to 10 points as Laymarr
Marshall rushed in from a yard out to make the score 24-14 early
in the final period.
Duke got no closer as Smith scored his third touchdown of the
day with 12:26 left on an eight-yard run.
Fisher completed 21-of-42 passes for 226 yards, but was
intercepted three times, all by Brian Dawkins.
The Blue Devils are 14-25-1 all-time against Clemson and have
not won there since 1980. Duke is 4-13-1 all-time at Death
Valley. Clemson entered the game with the nation's fifth-ranked
scoring defense at 16 points per game.
