I'm not sure there were any contracts out there that were expiring. There probably isn't much Karl Benson can do as far as Bowls go. Unless ESPN is willing to revive the SV Bowl... which is extremely unlikely. The WAC is going to be in a bad position until some contracts expire.
Seems like we're sitting on our thumbs waiting for contracts to expire in this conference.... Meanwhile, our best teams are exceeding expectations.

I wish the SEC or the Big XII would dump the Indy bowl and Karl could pick it up...match up against either SEC or Big XII. If both backed out, we could get CUSA.

RE: The WAC needs another Bowl
With addition of some new bowls last year, including the New Mexico Bowl, and implementation of a 12-game season, it's likely that the NCAA will watch how things work for while before certifying any more bowl games. And with conferences able to fill tie-ins with 6-6 teams, I'm not counting on openings...I know there were a couple last year, but 1) they won't be known until very late in the game, and 2) they may not be there every year. If there are openings, the WAC could easily be the beneficiary of having a 7-5 team available to fill one. Last year showed that it's going to be a very hard thing to predict.

The Hawaii paper said this on May 15th:
"...the San Diego-based Poinsettia Bowl and prospective bowls from Seattle and Salt Lake City that are expected to seek NCAA licensing have also been in contact with the Pac-10."

If these two potential Bowls and the Poinsettia are in contact with the Pac-10, the WAC could easily initiate contact and work a deal.
The opportunities could be there.

There is a small bit of genius that has gone largely unnoticed with the WAC bowl affiliations. For four straight years the WAC has gotten an extra bowl game in large part due to the fact that no WAC Bowl is guarenteed any certain WAC pick. While other conferences are shopping out the team that is left out of a bowl the WAC is shopping out the most marketable team it has.

Suhweeet! I did a couple brief searches trying to find such news...to no avail.
To anyone who thinks there are too many bowls, all I can say is..."there's nothing forcing you to watch them."

RE: The WAC needs another Bowl
KP - You're absolutely right about the WAC's Bowl philosophy. I love the fact that the WAC is very flexible when it comes to Bowls and its teams. Very smart move.
CL - I'm very interested in that Bowl in Seattle...if it happens. If it could be a Pac-10 vs. WAC match-up, ...how sweet that would be.
The Poinsettia isn't as attractive...simply because we already have one WAC vs. MWC match-up in the NM Bowl. But...it's a good second option.
By 2009 or '10, I think the WAC will be ripe to grab the Emerald Bowl away from the ACC. Actually, I think the ACC would be thrilled to hand it over.

I'm cool with showing our superiority over the MWC as many times as is needed.

I think the WAC would be a great fit for the Emerald Bowl. There are many WAC teams that would travel in large quantity to SF.
