Somerville Beltway
Somerville Beltway
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is proposing, on new location, a beltway facility encircling the City of Somerville.

An Environmental Assessment (EA) is being prepared in accordance with 23 CFR 771 and National Environmental Protection Act of 1969 regulations.

I've been through sommerville several times and never thought that they need a beltway, another waste of taxpayer money.

Hard to disagree with that.

RE: Somerville Beltway
This project is in the planning stage. I don't believe it has been approved yet.

However, I'm quite surprised that our state government is actually planning ahead.

Fayette County is growing fast. Somerville is the county seat.

It could be that officials expect traffic to increase over the next 20 years and that roads must be ready to be built as need predicts.

Like I mentioned, it seems like somebody is actually planning ahead.

As a Memphian, I can appreciate this simply because our pathetic expressway system is the direct of result of a lack of planning. Compared to other major cities Memphis has no expressway system.

And what little we do have is drastically inadequate considering we are a distribution/transportation hub which has great need for a good road network design.

If the Somerville Beltway is built, and with the vast green spaces in Fayette County, it seems that controlled-access roads can be built like spokes, from 385/Piperton to Somerville, I40/Braden to Somerville, La Grange to Somerville.

Heck, some day Fayette County might just have a better road network than Shelby County, just like North Mississippi.

And Somerville will be quite irrevalant also. Just like Covington in Tipton. South Tipton is where it's at. Fayette will be all about the west end. But it will take awhile. I don't have a problem with that south end bypass in the map. The north side should be scraped unless Fayette wants to pay for it.
