Person of the year
Time does this every year. There are some obvious nominees every year, like Bush and other world leaders. who would you nominate, and why? It doesn't have to be positive reasons, and you don't need to be endorsing policies of the nominees.
I nominate Hugo Chavez. From trying to form a coalition of anti-first world countries to insulting Bush at the UN, this guys has been in the news all year, and he's trying to change the dynamic of third world countries.
If people post and we get some more nominees, perhaps, we'll vote.

Who? Oh, THAT guy. How much did you want to bet? He's been disowned by my father, a Marine. He's a POS for what he said about our troops.
Until you've donned the uniform, you wouldn't know how pissed we are at him.
"F" Murtha.

I have no problems with Webb, other than he's a Democrat.
My disdain for that idiot Murtha has not a damn thing to do with his Iraq comments. It was his idiotic statements about troops.

I would have to go with this guy...
obviously more for the worst reasons but he has had a profound impact on the world. With his funding of Hezbollah and the war in Lebanon that he helped instigate to his continued funding of the Iraqi insurgency and the impact he has on their inner politics. The guy farts and oil goes up $2 a barrell and unfortunately he will be around for quite some time.

I am with you. IMO he is going to be one of the biggest players on the world stage before very long. He's got the West by the ballz and he knows it.

Unless that was meant tongue-in-cheek, I wouldn't go that far. Time has a history of what many Americans would consider offensive nominees (Osama in 2001) because their criteria is that the person has to have had a huge impact on the world dynamic, good or bad. If they were alive, Stalin and Hitler would be nominees...Genghis Khan would have been nominated...Caesar and Napolean too. It has nothing to do with a right or wrong way of doing things, just pure impact.
IMHO, they do it simply for the publicity.

Yeah, he said it didn't mean you agreed with them. But at the same time, the reasons he cited (insulting Bush at the UN?) make me think he does have a certain admiration ofr him.
It was somewhat TIC, but still the only nominees are people of dubious character and/or goals. OSL is a viable nominee on that basis, maybe even Tim McVea. I think of Person of the Year a little more positively than that. The way it is done it should be called "Mover and Shaker of the Year", I guess.
In any case, Chavez does NOT get my vote, no matter how the contest is defined.

What the rock? My hero? Vomit...
I have absolutely no admiration for anyone calling my president satan, even if I do disagree with the president sometimes. I also firmly disagree with Hugo's politics. Your portrayal of my nomination is disgusting to me.

Ooh, how about Zinedine Zidane? No one has ever gotten Americans more interested in soccer for more than 5 minutes. Zidane took it to 6 minutes.
Ken Lay for being convicted and the getting out of it the most graceful way that he could.
